I don't travel on the highway much however. But if the speed limit is 70 and im going 85, if i truly stuck to the rule of left lane for passing, right lane when not passing I'd essentially be weaving in and out of traffic every few seconds. So thus i camp.

However i do pay attention to my surroundings. I don't camp there preventing people from going. If a faster car approaches i get out of the way and i don't tailgate people or am an agressive driver really.

i was always told the left lane was for passing and only passing, no exceptions, which is why i brought it up.

the police dont bother to monitor it though, at least ive never been pulled over though as i said i hardly travel on the highway long distances so small sample size.

oh yeah, definitely.

I dont drive aggressively or anything and on normal roads I go speed limit/a little above usually but when I have to drive for hours on a highway I kinda want to get it over with thus going fast.

the idea I think is that the left lanes should be moving faster than the right lanes. that's what lets traffic keep flowing. you should be going a little faster than the cars on your right.

there is a trend lately here for there to be tons of obstinant drivers in the left lanes who go exactly the speed of the right lane or slower, unless the right lane is clear then they speed up to the next car before slowing down again, all seemingly in an attempt to block traffic. pain in the ass.

The worst is when someone is going slower than you in the passing lane, so you move over to pass them, and then they decide to speed up. The nobody is allowed to pass me attitude.

I kinda play it by ear. I will camp in the far left lane if it means me weaving in and out too much because the cars in the right lane over are not spread out enough. I do stay aware and move out of the far left lane if I see a fast approaching car behind me.

Slower driving cars in the far left lane is bothersome since to me that is meant for passing but it also bothers me when I move over to let a faster car pass only for that car to slow down after passing me.

They should just eliminate that rule, half of anyone doesn't understand it and it doesn't work under real world circumstances. At its best the advantages of it working are marginal unless you only allow one person to do 150mph+ in it.

The difference between doing 85 and 70 is about 15 minutes per 100 miles, and that's presuming you're able to maintain it the entire time. It's really not that significant a difference, considering how significantly you're speeding.

In your example, someone would be going about 21% over the limit. Same as someone going 30 in a 25.

Going 15 over is a lot for slower speed limit areas. Not nearly so much on a high speed highway.

California doesnt have that law so number 1 lane is usually the slowest lane with everyone trying to get in it because they think itll be the fastest.

You can drive in the left lane all you want, so long as you're not impeding traffic and no one will care.

I do that shit if someone's tailgating me, but I'm not usually in the passing lane.
