The top thing on reddit right now is about America switching to the metric system, so of course I sorted by Controversial to get decent discussion.

And it is full of people being downvoted for saying Fahrenheit is better than Celsius. But Fahrenheit is absolutely a better way of describing the outside temperature than Celsius.

The 0 to 100 scale in Celsius is fantastic for measuring the temperature of water. But the temperature outside will almost always be between 0 and 100 F in most areas of the world. That is -18 C to 38 C, which suddenly is not so pretty anymore, and also is only a 50 degree scale which is only half of what Fahrenheit represents (unless you start using half degrees, which are also ugly and inconvenient).

There is so much irony in metric fans making fun of Americans for holding on to the Imperial system but at the same time holding on to Celsius for measuring outside temperature.

I gave my argument as to why it's better in the first post.

Yes, for something like miles, they are not really better or worse than kilometers. Americans are just used to them. Although the entire scale of millimeters-centimeters-meters-kilometers is definitely better than inches-feet-yards-miles because the metric ones can easily scale up and down (although the metric system really needs to make decimeters a more common measure).

But literally the only reason why someone would prefer Celsius over Fahrenheit for measuring outside temperature is being used to Celsius.

How?

A city is 600 miles away, I know it will take about 10 hours of driving to get there going 60 m/h on average.

You can do the same conversions with kilometers, but I am used to distances (as well as the how fast you are going) being in miles.

the fact that it gets much colder does not seem like a reason to dress down significantly in frostbite-inducing conditions

also once you're below perhaps -10C, seems like the outdoor temperature ceases to matter and you're best off just not going outdoors at all.
