Maybe belief in death is as irrational as belief in an afterlife. It's a type of afterlife in a way, albeit one in which you're not conscious. I think existing is permanent. As soon as you die you are recincarnated as something or someone else.

My toenails are alive, but they're pretty shit vehicles for consciousness. I've got a pretty semi-detached relationship with my toenails and to me, knowing they might live on after my departure is scant comfort.
