Sort of, yes.

When Xenogears was first made, it was supposed to be "Chapter 5" in a six chapter story. What the other five chapters were supposed to be was outlined in a book only released in Japan.

When the people who developed the game left Square and formed Monolith Soft, their initial plan was to mostly continue the originally intended story. Xenosaga was going to be Chapter 1, the next game was going to be Chapter 2, and so on.

Plans changed almost immediately - they wound up skipping Chapter 1 entirely (it's referenced in the opening scene flashback with the astronauts), and Xenosaga basically became Chapter 2. And then they kept releasing direct sequels to it, rather than moving on to Chapter 3. And they kept changing minor details along the way, weakening the overall connection to Xenogears.

By the end all three Xenosaga games basically wound up being a sort of different parallel universe, rather than a direct prequel to Xenogears. So in that sense, it's technically not really a spin-off any more.

even though it do show the 2 main char from xenogears on xenosaga? they show up as children but you can totally see who they was

xenosaga and xenoblade are derivated from xenogears, so it can be considerated a spin off or spiritual sucessor

It started out being the same universe, by the end it basically wasn't.

So arguably, the series started out as the spiritual successor to Xenogears, but ultimately became a spiritual successor instead.

Man, I only got to play like the first 1/4 of the Xenosaga game. They really need to release the trilogy as a compilation on the current gen consoles or the PC.

Xenoblade has non canon KOS-MOS and Xenosaga has Fei and Elly character designs with different names. This is all absolutely one franchise (especially with the intentional naming scheme) that's just in a unique situation of 3 different publishers.

Xenogears was supposed to be many parts and was cut short. Xenosaga was supposed to be many parts and was cut short. People have combined these stories that Gears was supposed to slot into Saga some way and that was not the case.

Edit: More on Saga. It was going to be 6 episodes but was reduced to 3. As I understand it they still mostly cover the material of the larger arc, but had to rush it and fit it into 3 games. Not that it just leaves off 3 full games and Xenogears is supposed to be one of those or something.

I don't think it's canon, which is why I said non canon in the post you added to yours. No shit Monolith Soft doesn't own each of these and they aren't all officially connected. They are as connected as Final Fantasy is and are as close as the law allows.

Good luck buying the third game in the series though. It's quite the collectors item last I checked. Yup, about 90 bucks on ebay for the third game.

Good luck buying the third game in the series though. It's quite the collectors item last I checked. Yup, about 90 bucks on ebay for the third game.

I make decent money, so 90 bucks isn't too bad. I'd rather just have a remaster or something though, PS2 emulation had a lot of issues when I last tried it.(that was like 15 years ago though)
