There's some stuff out there but the vocals always kill it for me.

It's also usually unbearably poppy but here's an example of a recent "new wave" song.

New Wave itself in the 80s was pop, so of course it was/is "poppy". But that's fine because I like some New Wave songs that i've heard from the 80s so far.

Ah good. And yeah of course, I suppose I should have specified unbearably poppy for my taste. I think video games and radio introduced me to most of the new wave I'm aware of after the fact, as that era precedes my awareness or care for music. There's definitely more than a few new wave songs from the era I enjoy though.

Video games are what introduced me to the genre, mainly the GTA Vice City games. I'm glad i got to hear some pretty awesome songs that i probably wouldn't've heard otherwise if it wasn't for some games i played.

For sure, I wish they would follow it up with a real sequel and an expanded soundtrack. That game had a great aesthetic generally.

I wish they would too, it would be awesome to have a game like Vice City with improved controls, camera, graphics, physics and things we have now for video games.

I hope someday soon Rockstar gives us a sequel or follow-up game in Vice City again set in the 80s, with the improvements we've seen in the last 2 GTA games and maybe even some more improvements also.

Yeah, I have yet to encounter any recent takes on new wave that I truly enjoy as much as stuff from the era. I think this is maybe one of two examples I know of that seem like genuine attempts at remaking that sound.

Wow, this is really good considering the age and how obscure it must have been back then. Daft Punk vibes though. IIRC I started paying actual attention to it around 2014.

The community around this type of sound is still fairly new but they are pushing out some great material. Wavemob, liquid ritual, vibe.digital are some of the labels for the genre.
