Keep it.

She caught it in our backyard, before the dog could chomp on it.

It was a decent size, so I figured it would be fairly hardy and easy enough for her to care for with our help without it croaking.

So we put it in a small tank (my daughter usually puts bugs she catches in here) with some dirt and branches and head out to the pet store, to find out what kind of lizard it is, and what to get for it.

The pet store welcomes us, we explain the situation, they think it's a cute story and ask us to show the lizard, saying it was probably an anole or a leapord gecko as those are common here... until they see it. Then their eyes bug out of their head.

The things not an adult, despite being larger than most lizards we see running around, it's a baby, it's basically the equivalent of a monitor lizard, and it's going to get freaking massive.

They say it's a tengu. And this things not native to this state. I dont even think its native in the us. Everything I look up says they're native to central and south america? What was it doing in my backyard? And why, out of all the lizards running around for my daughter to catch, did she she snag the one that's going to turn Into freaking Godzilla?

holy shit that is not your regular backyard lizard for sure

should just let it go tbh

Thinking about it, but if we do we cant just let It back into the suburban wild, it doesnt belong here, and they are aggressively invasive. Though this one is pretty chill, and has already adapted to allowing me to pet it.

If we do keep it, well need to get a bigger cage for when it inevitably outgrows that one. But I can make a pen in the backyard easily enough with some lumber and chicken wire, we definitely have the room for it.

It's pretty easy to feed though, it does well with fruits vegetables and eggs.

I know man, that's why I'm trying to make it a vegetarian!

I'm glad this thing is omnivorous though, having to keep getting and dusting crickets sounds like a pain.

But man it was fun watching him wreck that bag of crickets we got.

I have some friend's who are into reptiles, and they swayed me from neutral to seeing they are often great additions if you take care of them.

Personally hope y'all hold on to him, but if not, there might be some local reptile groups you could find for a foster....

Those reptile people will take in as many as they can xD

Theres only one responsible thing to do... Smash it with a hammer. Not a joke. You cant turn it loose. Its an invasive species. It would be hugely irresponsible to put that thing back out into the wild. And you cant keep that thing. Look how freakin big its going to get. Your daughters not going to think its cute when its the size of a dog. Its not a pet. Smashing it with a hammer is the only humane option.

@Johnny_Nutcase get your sledgehammer! This fucker wants to crush that cute little lizard!

Tc don't listen to him, if I had a dog sized lizard when I was a little girl I'd LOVE THAT CRITTER TO DEATH! And there's plenty of other people who'd love him too if you decide against keeping him.

Then youre part of the problem. What do you think a city or town is going to do when they pay people to round these things up? I promise you a hammer is more humane than slowly dying in some trap. I know slugging these lizards with a hammer sounds awful, but invasive species can decimate an ecology. Youre causing much more suffering by letting it go. Youve got to nut up, be a real man, and give it one good whack out on the concrete. Put it over a flame and eat it if that makes your morals feel better.

Well, apparently they are delicious and their hides make great leather. So if they are smashing them with hammers they are dum dums.

I'm not releasing it back into the suburban wilds if it turns out to indeed be a tengu. It is an invasive species after all. And..... I wont be eating him or turning him into boots either. (It would devastate the kids.)

But I'm not smashing it with a hammer either. We've decided to keep it for a while, and if it does start getting godzilla size we've talked to local pet stores and they have no problem adopting him as the local giant lizard mascot provided hes freindly enough, which he already seems to be.

I'm not so sure its indeed a tegu though, I just cant get a match with pics of the various juveniles. The most likely would be the argentina black and white because of their popularity (escaped from a local breeder or something?) But they should be green on the fro t half as juveniles, and I cant find any that have the twin dorsal stripes.

Nice. I don't get letting kids name pets dumb names tho. They'll throw a fit for 5 minutes at worst but you have to say that dumb name for the foreseeable future lol. They'll learn to love the better name you're capable of giving it. Do it for the sake of the lizards pride. What if he's sensitive about his white spots and you guys just keep pointing em out everytime you say his name, that's just insensitive. Im going to bed angry now, good job.

Look animal control can do what they want, that's on them. They will have to answer to their actions before The Lord. I'm not about to smash some large lizard with a hammer and get its guts all over the neighborhood and then clean it up too. First, this is because I like lizards and that would hurt my feelings. Second, it's fricken disgusting. If lizard goes on to be a menace, I'm sure the world will adapt. The climate is crumbling as it is anyway, me going around smashing lizards is a non-thing in the grand scheme of things, but definitely a huge thing in my own little slice of world experience.
