If you can't keep it call around to no-kill shelters or reptile and wildlife refuges. It's only an invasive species if you let it go. Given how easily your daughter caught it, and the fact that it lets you pet it, it's probably tame. Which means it's a pet, not an invasive species.

If it does indeed turn out to be a tegu, a local pet shop has already agreed to take it on as a store mascot (this way the kids can go visit). But I really dont think it is, I think the shop missed on the id. I think it's a spotted whiptail, as other people in here have mentioned. So to get this thing to drink we spray water so it can lick up the beads (it doesnt like drinking from a pool of water in a dish I guess).
