If you want to talk about how X is your favorite character in a discussion about said video game without ever playing it, then go ahead. However, if the discussion turns to gameplay, then you need to fuck off. If people start talking about strategies and whatnot, its time for you to leave the discussion. As long as people understand this, then everything is okay. Fan is a fairly broad term and Im not one for gatekeeping.
