I'm amazed this didn't get picked up by anyone else on CE...

Under the proposed law, extramarital sex can be punished by up to one year in prison and couples can be prosecuted if a close family lodges a police complaint.
Rights groups say, while the article does not specifically mention same-sex conduct, it effectively criminalizes all same-sex relationships. Members of the LGBT community, who already face persecution and discrimination in the country, could also be targeted with a vaguely-worded article that criminalizes "obscene acts" with a penalty of up to six months in prison.
And unmarried couples who are reported to police for living together could be sentenced to six months in prison or face a fine. A village chief can also file a police complaint if close family do not object.
Among the many changes to existing laws, the draft code states that only a doctors have the right to decide to perform an abortion and a woman could face four years in prison for having one. Anyone who helps a woman terminate her pregnancy faces five years in jail.
The code would also make it a criminal offense to insult the president or vice-president, raising concerns relating to the stifling of press freedom.

Fair point. I think a good number of people here still remember Jokowi refusing to back down on pressing for death penalty for several Australians caught smuggling drugs in Indonesia... on one hand, I was surprised he didn't bow down and offer clemency, but on the other, I respect that his house his rules kind of mentality and he didn't cave in to international pressure.

Although that was prior to re-election and the current situation he's in... but hey, a new capital coming soon.

Iirc only one of their provinces is particularly strict with religious (so Muslim based) laws. But everywhere is very hard on stuff like illegal drug usage, which is common in Asia in general.

i went there back in 2010. the food is good and if you just stick to the resorts at like places like, Bali or whatever its nice.

but i wouldn't spend too long in their cities.

also the muslim world typically was considered more advanced than the west, in medieval times. they were still behind, by our standards. but back then, the east was more civilized than the west.

a few info that people should know about the situation:
this extra marital sex law is only one of the controversial new laws that about to be passed. others including:
- jailtime if you are considered to be insulting the president.
- jailtime for abortion
- the sentence for a corruptor is minimum 2 years and a fine withmaximum 200 million rupiah, or equal to 14k $.
- 10 million rupiah fine if you chicken trespasses into neighbor's lawn. note that indonesian average income is 1/15 of american's (absurd law)
- showing off contraception (like condom) to your own children. (another absurd law)

currently there's countrywide protest by the students, but they are suppressing the press.
they might will disable the internet or at least the social media again, just like what they did on voting day.

also note that the law is not just criminalize sex out of marriage. man and woman sharing a room together (business trip etc) would also be affected.

the Indonesian government is getting more pathetic.
the Police's official twitter account has accused that the ambulances from the capital city are providing rocks and molotov bombs for the protester.
note that the governor of the capital is from the opposition party and getting huge support from the people, so they tried to take a chance to smear his name again with this situation.
they deleted that tweet now, but digital footprints still exist.

anyway, the cops finally admitted they are wrong in the ambulance case, but still try to spin the attack on the ambulances that it's because a stone thrower taking refuge in one of them.

currently 2 students died of gunshots in Kendari, and one other died in Jakarta but police denied the responsibility on him.

and now the Ministry of Research, Technology and Higher Education has announced they are preparing some sanction for the Rectors of the Universities that can't stop the student from protesting.
in the last few years, protesting students will have a hard time to graduate because of the unofficial threat from the government.

currently other than the protests on the new laws, there's a riot on Papua island where more than 30 people are dead, and many of them burned alive including a whole family.
but we can't do anything about it because we are afraid to be called racist or oppressive because the people of Papua are minority(relative to national scale) and non-muslim. all of the victims are non Papuan btw. currently over 3000 non-native Papuan are evacuating from there, with the projected number will be 10.000 in near future.
