whether it be school, the armed forces, or whatever, we eventually enter environments that introduce us to elements that weren't in our bubble before.

things that introduce us to different demographics. to people who share beliefs we didn't even know people had, but actually have to look them in the eye still. like maybe a room mate, lol.

have there been any experiences that "enlightened" you to the point that you see that aspect of life through a different perspective?

even through occupations/activities. teaching, nursing, working within the criminal justice system, volunteer work, church/religious related activities... things that push you into the world of new people.

I work in a program in the university that I graduated from, where the focus is helping black students stay in college.

and in relation to how I've seen it benefit the students who have enrolled in it, I feel like I better understand how we don't always know the resources and networks available to us, so I've been trying to be more open and keeping my eyes open.

I got lucky and joined a community in the military that is full of intelligent, interesting and usually more liberally minded individuals, so it's been pretty rewarding in that aspect.

nothing wrong with being enlightened by CE. not every social experience is in person, after all. spend a few years posting on the internet and you'll learn things about people that they even keep from their families, lol.

I had a special needs neighbor when I was a kid. I was 10 and he was 11, but I looked out for him because he got picked on. I ended up beating up a lot of kids over him, lol. he had a learning disability, was bipolar and had other issues going on, but was overall a good kid. he changed the way I interacted with people like him for the rest of my life and gave me a higher level of patience, compassion and understanding.

but it also taught me that you can't "rescue" anybody from circumstance. some people will simply target those who they feel can't defend themselves, and I was getting suspended more times than I could count for fighting. those zero tolerance policies didn't leave room for explanations, lol.

we went to separate high schools and he eventually moved. but I learned early that nobody but a select few give a damn about mental health and would rather just find ways to keep these types out of sight and out of mind.
