I'll be washing my hands of it once the last movie comes out, though. The live action part is part of Shinji deciding the result of the Human Instrumentality project. Asuka was placed in her Eva at the bottom of the lake for safety. The government was ordered to murder the pilots. She realized her mom, the part that was missing and made her mom insane in those flashbacks, is in her Eva, and that she loved her still.
