I never imagined there would be so many people with such strong emotions about sacrificing 10 seconds of their day.

God you guys are so entitled. Youre nothing special. Just let the dude do his fucking job

After I pay for the stuff at the checkout, it becomes my property (and that includes the receipt). They're not getting their hands on it, especially when they have no reason to suspect me of stealing anything. Now, if they were to make you sign an agreement that you show your receipt on the way out (as CostCo does for their membership) then that would be different. But for now, if any Walmart employee wants my receipt then they can come and take it. I'm not handing it over of my own free will.

If you haven't stolen anything why does a simple check illicit such powerful negative emotions in you? Careful, such toxic attitudes can easily evolve into something ghastly if you don't make the effort to calm your inner demons

he is the kind of person who would say nothing but I plead the 5th and/or am I being detained to law enforcement over and over again

If it's anything other than a minor traffic violation, then that absolutely is what I'll do. What's wrong with that?

And simply invoking the fifth amendment isn't sufficient anymore. You also need to repeatedly emphasize that you won't talk to them without legal counsel present.

I've literally never stolen anything. They need some kind of better system. I don't like being treated like a thief. I'm not a shitty person like that.

You must look like a thief then if you keep getting stopped. I have only ever been stopped a few times in my life (as far as I can recall).

As someone else mentioned though, these "random" searches help keep prices down by reducing theft (both directly by catching the act or indirectly by discouraging people from trying).

I'm not against bag checkers, but any savings the store makes is definitely not being passed on to the customer. The trickle-down effect is a complete myth.

Its the opposite. Particular item gets stolen enough they raise the price. Ive watched it happen when cough meds particularly corcidin cough and cold. Watched it go from 5 bucks to 7 and and some change and a span of a few months. Then they finally started putting it behind the pharmacy counter.

So yeah savings dont get passed on to you lost income gets passed on to you
