https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2019-09-04/tax-cookies-not-sodas-to-battle-bulging-waistlines-study-finds

Making chocolate bars, cookies and cakes 20% more expensive would reduce U.K. obesity by 2.7 percentage points, according to research published in the British Medical Journal. A similar tax increase on sweetened beverages would deliver only half as much weight benefit, the scientists found.
One in four adults in the U.K. is obese. The nations consumers get more sugar from snacks, cakes and cookies than from soft drinks, which helps explain the extra weight loss noted in the study.
Most economic policies implemented to reduce obesity rates have concerned taxes on sugar-sweetened beverages, Bernadette Moore and Barbara Fielding, two British nutrition experts, wrote in an accompanying editorial. The studys novelty is the suggestion that increasing the price of sugary snacks might be more effective.

While I agree with limiting or taxing sweet and carb-dense foods, overeating is the bigger culprit than the actual foods themselves. If people stopped eating so frequently and lowered caloric intake, then you lose weight easily. Your hormones get messed up when you eat too frequently, and your body will never be able to repair itself or use the nutrients efficiently if it has to constantly spend energy on digesting and absorbing. The body is a machine and you have to take care of it by putting in the right fuel.

How would that help? It says what they'd do, the study is about raising taxes.

If you want to be pedantic and ignore the obvious joke about a country that:

-requires a license to watch OTA television broadcast;
-fines people for mean tweets;
-literally raids people's houses to take pliers and safety scissors, and act like they're preventing mass murder;

then the study isn't about 'what they'd do' at all.

20% isn't that high for an excise tax; 40% of the sticker price for beer is due to excise taxes, for instance
