Apparently not making arrests is great for reducing crime

https://reason.com/2017/09/26/study-finds-nypd-slowdown-in-petty-law-e/

The study, based on NYPD crime statistics, was published in Nature Human Behavior.
"We find that civilian complaints of major crimes (such as burglary, felony assault and grand larceny) decreased during and shortly after sharp reductions in proactive policing," the study's authors wrote. "The results challenge prevailing scholarship as well as conventional wisdom on authority and legal compliance, as they imply that aggressively enforcing minor legal statutes incites more severe criminal acts."
During the slowdownwhich was launched, ironically, as a protest against police reformcops stopped making unnecessary arrests, traffic violation citations saw a 94 percent drop, parking violation citations went down 92 percent, and there was an overall drop in arrests of 66 percent. Essentially, "broken windows" policing stopped.

These are good outcomes. Cop advocates argued during the slowdown that such "proactive policing" put them in danger. But it also puts the people they come into contact with in danger. Reducing unnecessary interactions between police officers and residents is an important component of any effort to reduce police violence and abuse. This could have been an opportunity for advocates of police reform to point out that their goals and the preferences of many police officers are not so far apart.

Well this may be, but certainly we need a militarized police. I feel much safer when my PD has armored personnel carriers.

By making fewer arrests theyre referring to actually following protocol and not harassing people of color on a consistent basis.

Yeah I remember when that happened. It was wonderful actually. The city was so peaceful. There was no huge outburst of crime like they wish would have happened. Turns out harassing people over petty violations doesn't actually make the city safer

Oh no, fucker that choked someone to death over selling loosie cigarettes was fired. Let's stop actually doing our jobs... or more accurately, let's stop being overzealous and only doing what we should actually be doing. Like not choking people to death for minor crimes.

You do understand that the only reason he was selling loosies was due to NYC's taxation, right?

And that he literally wasn't choked to death?

And the worst part about it was that he wasn't selling loosie cigarettes that day. The officers harassed him because they remembered that he had done it in the past. So he literally lost his life while committing no crime and the police force want to justify it and cover for their guy Pantaleo who literally murdered an innocent man on camera.

Even if he was selling loosie cigarettes it still doesn't justify it but there fact that he wasn't makes it even more sad

There was a fight in the bodega that he was at and he broke up the fight. The cops were on the scene because they had been called by the store prefers due to the fight that happened. So it was a completely unrelated incident but the officers harrased Garner because they knew of his prior history with cigarettes

He not only was choked to death but they also pushed his head into the concrete while he was in the floor screaming I can't breath.

So, he was choked for two weeks straight? And still died from a heart attack?

that's fair, so what other event was responsible for the change in crime rates in that specific 7 week period?

If I shoot you in the stomach. And you go to the hospital and die 2 weeks later due to stomach and kidney failure. Does that mean I did not kill you by shooting you in the stomach?

Not the same thing - a bullet to the abdomen would likely fuck up your kidney. A chokehold, practiced millions of times a day, isn't anywhere near likely to cause a heart attack two weeks later.

does the existing data support the notion that crime rates fluctuate significantly, sometimes at random?

if so, our ability to draw conclusions from this small data set is reduced

In my comment, no - I said that chokeholds are practiced millions of times a day. Wrestlers, military personnel, children roughhousing, kinky people, and cops make up such a number.

And this is the first time anyone knows of where it caused a heart attack two weeks later.

Here's the study itself fyi

https://news.guns.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/09/s41562-017-0211-5.pdf

tl;dr crime does fluctuate more or less randomly but the drop off was far outside the norm for that kind of thing

The chokehold and their continued assault while he was in the ground is what caused his heart attack. Just because he may or may not have been more sensitive doesn't take away their culpability in what happened. If pushed a 99 year old lady to the ground and she died, that would make me a murderer m it's not get fault for dying because she's 99 years old. She had a right to live

Eric Garner's literal cause of death after forensic examination

"Compression of neck (choke hold), compression of chest and prone positioning during physical restraint by police".

You biased opinions on this subject hold no weight. His literal cause of death is from the compression of his neck from Pantaleo. Which the whole world saw on video.

Anyone arguing against this is basically killing they're credibility. The facts are clear as day
