I did not do this. is it too late now? I was gonna explore Zozo some more next time anyway because I think I went straight to the 'correct' building almost immediately and cleared it.

If you want a quick basic rundown, this is the gist of it. Its pretty simple:

You equip an Esper to a character. It will show magic spells that it can permanently teach to a character. For example, Ramuh is Thunder x10, Thundara x2, and Poison x5.

You will now gain Magic AP in fights. These are applied to the magic spells that an Esper is teaching a character. So if you gain 2 Magic AP from one fight, then the character with Ramuh will gain 20 AP for Thunder, 4 AP for Thundara, and 10 AP for Poison. When they reach 100, the spell is permanently learned by that character.

Each Esper gives a permanent boost to a character if they are equipped during a level up. Ramuh is +1 Stamina. So if Celes has Ramuh equipped when she gains a level, her stars will also gain a +1 to stamina.

An Esper can also be used as a summon once per battle.
