There's also a big difference between a patient/family member who is just being an aggressive dick because they are annoyed/whatever and someone who is suffering issues. Defending yourself against the former shouldn't be treated anywhere near as harshly as the latter.

TC, thank you for all you do in the medical field for the betterment of people's health, and for being on the front line(Much respect), and I agree you should have some form of protection against that kind of harassment. Its almost as if you would need to wear a body camera every time you go and visit a patient then show said evidence to the supervisor and hope a difference is made, but I don't know if that is legal.

I wish you the best in this struggle and even though there is nothing I can do directly, other than giving you some encouragement that someone sees what is going on and can make a difference for you. That way you can focus on the what you're doing, instead of trying to dodge an object, evaluate a patient, parry an attack, and make a diagnosis all in a three minute window.

I mean, if it's something that's common knowledge and you knew it was a risk going into the field then you only have yourself to blame.

I was in a very similar situation, I worked as a behavioral therapist, and got tired of being assaulted. However I knew it came with the job and everybody else in the field has to deal with it. Self defense was in no way justifiable so I quit.

Of course my situation is different. I don't how prevalent the risk is or if it's talked about among those still pursuing a career in the medical field.

This is why I never ever give staff a hard time. I'm a stage iv colon cancer patient, so I'm in and out of E.R.s and hospitals pretty much all the time, and I don't want to be a burden to anyone. I treat everybody the way I'd like to be treated, and never raise my voice to anyone in particular (I've screamed and yelled in pain, sure, but never at anyone in the hospital).

I think it's gone well. Several nurses I've had I know for a fact have asked to put me on their shift because they know I won't give them shit and be thankful for the help I receive.

Hospital did nothing about it because what are you gonna do, the person is mentally unstable. I can only imagine what that must have felt like. Shes a small woman too.

i can't believe they would let that pass. so it basically means any mental patient could get a free fucking pass to do that shit. that's fucking wrong.

It shows a complete lack of empathy.

Yes, the person complaining about their day knows that they can get a new job.

It's just not what they need to hear while they're in the state they're in.

I honestly feel like hospital personnel are very nice to me because Im not a complete asshat. Its really not that hard but apparently it is for many people.

I will say one thing that SUCKS about hospitals is constantly being woken up during the night. Its anti-science, anti-medicine, and anti-the well-being of patients.

I know that I hate being woken up at night but nurses are required to turn their patients, especially elderly patients, every 2 hrs or so or purposely startle them to see if they are still alive.

Its a bad rule though, sleeping is like the number one thing needed to heal. I hope they change it.

I don't care much for it either, but it's not like they won't help you get to sleep if you ask. At least, that's what some of my nurses have told me. Plus, they don't mind keeping the door closed if you ask them.

They're afraid of patients developing pressure ulcers and those are very costly to the patient, facility, and insurance in the long run if they develop in the facility.

Im not sure thats true, tbh >.>

And either way they could do a lot better at reducing interruptions, and the medical field is aware of that.

That was what I was taught in nursing school, man.

And I seen pressure ulcer neglect in real life and they were no jokes. Stage III and IVs are serious.

Is that a problem for all patients or just elderly or with certain conditions?

You'll be surprised.

Patients have been known to assault CNAs and nurses alike. It is not uncommon to hear people being scratched, spat on, punched, etc.

The worst case that I have heard was someone that was willingingly trying to spread his HIV by pulling out an IV and spraying his blood everywhere.

How horrifying!

Guessing ER at a hospital in a bad area or large city?

I'm an admin for multiple medical practices. I have only heard of 2 cases that were really inappropriate. Both patients were discharged, one of them was taken away by the police.

Drug related patients are unpredictable and severely hurt patients can be irrational / inconsolable. There are typically warning signs you should be taught to identify, once identified ask for help from another coworker of the opposite sex to prevent as much as possible.

End of the day in the medical field we are there to help people, those people may not be in the correct state of mind to even realize or appreciate that. It is not an easy job, all the way from front desk to provider each has its own unique difficulties.

It's also pretty simple to understand that that doesn't justify employees not being able to defend themselves from clearly dangerous situations.

"It's part of the job" is such a stupid response. As if no work procedure in the entire world has ever changed as a result of shitty things happening

I'm talking about the topic title, and not the procedures of the hospital. If you're being attacked and you push someone off of you, you shouldn't be suspended. However when you enter a volatile environment like a hospital, with random people coming in and out, who have varying degrees of mental stability, you should know what the realities of the situation are before ever accepting the job. Should you have to deal with crazy, violent people at work? No. But I'm sure cops would love to not deal with criminals who shoot at them too.
