Just finished the first game, and loved it. I've got all four games, but I remember there being something weird about v3 really being 4 and there's a 3 anime that you need to watch two parts of in a weird order ot something. So if someone could explain that to me again, that would be great.

Also, Ultra Despair Girls before or after DR2? I know it's set before 2, but interquels are sometimes written assuming you already know spoilers that occur afterwards chronologically.

And are there any other manga/light novel spinoffs available in English that are worth reading?

Its not required to watch any of the anime for the games. Ive heard UDG is terrible too. Id just play 1, 2 and V3 and then the rest of the stuff if you still feel like it

But UDG comes after 2 if you want to play it. And the anime (Danganronpa 3) comes after UDG.

But yes, just play 1, 2, and V3. Then decide if you want more.

What they said. 1,2,V3. You can basically skip and not care about anything else.

Yeah what everyone else said 1,2,V3 are the only ones that matter. UDG and the DR3 anime is cool if you end up being a huge fan and need more DR in your life but I don't actually recommend them

honestly I really liked the Danganronpa 3 anime, it sort of wraps up the story of the 1st and 2nd games and is really just pretty decent

V3 kind of stands alone from the first two games and the anime

as far as watching the anime, it's weird because it's two parts (Despair Arc and Future Arc)

Despair takes place before DR1 and Future takes place DR2 but you're supposed to watch them back and forth episode by episode (Future, Despair, Future, etc.) because they have connecting stories/characters

I liked UDG as a fun spinoff that makes a character from DR1 more likable.

I liked D3 Anime since as said it provides closure for 1 and 2.

Not sure why everyone is saying not to watch the anime. Yeah, go 1,2, anime, v3.

Yeah the anime was pretty decent. I couldnt get through more than a few hours of an LP of UDG, though (and the gameplay looked pretty boring).

I've been stalled on Ultra Despair Girls for nearly two years now. It's not bad, per se. It's just so boring. I keep telling myself I need to beat this before I watch the anime and play V3, but alas.

The anime has some decent stuff but REALLY drops the ball in some aspects, ESPECIALLY the despair arc. Like, I enjoyed it in a vaccum, but in regards to impact on the franchise, it kind of does it's best to make 2 worse.

You don't really need to do UDG or the anime, but if you do want to do everything, make sure you do UDG before the anime, because the anime spoils UDG.

The anime is awful, especially the despair arc. It works as closure to 1 and 2, but the closure sucks and it out right ruined a few characters for me so I'd suggest not bothering with it.
Udg is... ok.

Neither are necessary.
Dangan ronpa is a very small what if story that I like that can be read after DR1.
Apparently dangan ronpa 0 is a short prequel that can be read after dr2, but idk I never read it.

You must play the games in the order 1 -> 2 -> V3

If you want to play UDG, do it any time after playing 2
If you want to watch the anime, do it any time after playing UDG
If you want to read any of the light novels / mangas, it's safer to do it after playing 2

The anime and UDG really have no bearing on V3. You can play V3 without them if you want.

1, 2, 3, quit while you're ahead

(please note that my DRpinions are very unpopular and V3 goes at the end)

But V3 is definitely not 3

this is the correct answer btw

also note that there's an anime adaptation of 1, which is very skippable but a separate thing from 3 (which is itself a separate thing from the game V3)
(or maybe V3 is the anime and 3 is the game I can never keep that straight)

DR0 actually comes before 2 and more appropriately builds up a couple of things that come kind of from left field in that game. Real talk though I doubt many people are going to go far enough out of their way to read it and it's really pretty skippable.

If you loved the first game then you can probably stomach more sloppy writing, in which case feel free to knock yourself out and watch, play, or read whatever interests you. UDG is terrible but if you're a fan then the sky's the limit.

I see anything that isn't 1, 2 or V3 as a spin-off that elaborates on the messy story they concocted, if you wanna play it safe just tackle all that stuff after you finish the three main games. None of them are necessary to understand thw plot.
