Since beating that game I've always been caught up in what a disappointment that story was, after playing through a whole series where story was everything.

When a friend of my roomate was visiting last night the series came up briefly, and he asked which one I thought was the best, it suddenly hit me just how unparalleled every single other aspect of that entire game is other than the story. In fact, maybe one of the greatest games of all time? I've been struggling for the last half day with the thought that I've never actually enjoyed the act of moving around and interacting with the gameplay in a game more than V.

Imagine if that game didn't flop on the story, what a landmark release in gaming that would have been. I mean, it IS, but it has that inescapable blemish that can never be erased.

It's like games should be about gameplay or something. It's weird

or it's like games are about more than gameplay or something

but people have been having this dilemma about MGSV since it came out

MGSV's mechanics are absolutely top notch but it's not just the story that's holding it back. The map design is abysmal and pretty clearly half-baked, plus the missions have almost no variety, are insanely repetitive and very easily get boiled down to a game of self-limitation once you get certain key tools.

The best way to highlight it IMO is to compare how sparse Phantom Pain feels in all its enormity compared to how much content and varied gameplay Ground Zeroes wrung out of its much smaller map.

Ultimately you have some of the most fascinating tools in the genre and shit all of substance to actually do with them - that's what's truly so disappointing about MGSV. The story being so bad is just the twist of the knife.

People have had this dilemma throughout the entirety of the MGS series

And I dunno about unparalleled gameplay. The core gameplay system is extremely good but for the length of the game and sheer amount of repetitive mission content, it did wind up getting stale after a while. I think that's an important factor as well.

Edit: ninja'd

I will say that if Kojima was allowed to build on it, MGS6 (or the real MGS5, if you're a conspiracy theorist) probably would have been the best game in the series. V almost feels like a proof of concept. Instead, we got Survive and Kojima is making the most ambitious walking simulator of all time.

I still say Rising has the best combat in a Metal Gear game.

Yeah, the fact that there's so little variety for all of MGSV's fancy gameplay hurts it a lot, too. After a while, I got tired of blowing up tanks or rescuing hostages.

I enjoyed the intro part of V. That was awesome.

Stopped playing when you got to the horse. I went back to playing BotW at that point. <_<

I love the gameplay so much that it made me beat Metal Gear Survive.

Mgsv is pretty fantastic to play

Yeah, once you get into a groove with a particular playstyle there is little reason to switch, so it can feel repetitive.

But there are a metric ton of ways to do things! It's more on the slider scale toward freedom than scripted upgrades

You did indeed stab me in the back. However, you are only level one, whilst I am level 50. That means I should remain uninjured.

Yeah MGSV is the most fun I've had with a video game for 120 hours.

Even more than BotW probably.

Maybe in Death Stranding we'll see some of that mechanical genius applied in an actually well designed (and finished) game! I'm not holding my breath, but it sure would be cool.
