Without Gandhi we would have never got Mandela, MLK, and thus Obama.

It doesn't matter if he was "racist." His positive actions and words as an older man changed the world for the better.

Abraham Lincoln was a racist, yet his actions positively changed the future of the United States for the better. And most of us love him. Including academics (historians).

He didn't think African-Americans were equal to White Americans, but he also didn't agree that they should be enslaved.

He's actually pretty darn reasonable in Civ V.

Though from what I've heard about him in Civ VI, he's now apparently an asshole who's impossible to be friendly with, and someone who you should just prioritize killing off ASAP to relieve yourself of future headaches.

Ghandi's views towards race in the 1940s were more progressive than Indian views in 2019. It is still socially acceptable in India to judge people based on darkness of skin, and Indian TVs are constantly (and I do mean constantly) running ads for products that lighten skin color.

It's always interesting to me in these discussions who gets treated as "the default" or the standard-bearers of their time. This comes up a lot of course in discussions of civil war figures. To say that Nathan Bedford Forrest was a product of his time is to ignore that black people were of that time too. John Brown and Frederick Douglass were of that time.

Likewise, without knowing as much about the Indian context, I feel comfortable in saying that there are black people now and were black people then who rejected such attitudes about Africans/black/dark skinned people.
