Venom took off? I didnt even remember it existed.
Venom did excellent in the box office surprisingly, even though the movie itself didn't really review all that well.

Awhile back, Marvel was going bankrupt so in order to stay afloat, they sold some of their film rights to other studios. Like Fox getting X-men and Fantastic Four and Sony Pictures getting Spiderman. I think Paramount at one point had rights to Dr. strange but did nothing with it.

It's a funny bit of hindsight. Spiderman itself was a groundbreaking movie in the superhero genre so before that superhero films had no future. There's no way Marvel could have predicted the lack of Spiderman being so grievously felt in the MCU. They made the right choice at the time, but it was wrong in the long run.

I mean, wouldn't Sony just continue on with the storyline set up in the MCU films? Spider-Man really doesn't need to show up in more Avengers films tbqh

Or is all that BS Midnight Edge said right and they can't actually use the characters featured in the MCU?

They had no choice at the time. They had to sell the rights or the company would have went bankrupt.

The MCU as we know it wouldn't exist if Marvel had kept the film rights to Spider-Man and the X-Men. No way in hell would they gamble with an Iron Man movie if they didn't have to.

I'll be heartbroken if no deal is reached in the future because Holland's Spidey movies have been amazing additions to the MCU.

Sony only wanted Spider-Man at the time. They were offered $25 for every property, and turned, with the head literally saying "Nobody gives a shit about any of the other Marvel characters." That's how far in the hole Marvel was.

It's kinda too bad Disney/Marvel and Sony made this partnership to begin with. I think the series would have kept tanking under Sony and Disney could have made them a decent offer to get the the film rights back. Now due to the success of the new series, largely thanks to Disney. There's no way Sony will give it up or sell it for anything reasonable now.

are you saying he's not? Would IW have had the same emotional weight if Joe Schmo hero was turning to dust? Would Stark have had the same motivation to build the time machine in Endgame if he didn't have the guilt of losing Peter on his mind?

I get the feeling that Disney feels that they don't need Spider-Man after Captain Marvel made a billion dollars. Sony feels they don't need Disney after Venom and Spider-Verse did so well.

So yeah, Disney won't cave to a 50/50 split and Sony won't budge. That fact this is being announced leaves me to think it's done, this isn't just some walking away negotiating tactic.
