I mean yeah the gravity gun was cool but the game as a whole is just so dull. Its boring as hell with unsatisfying gunplay

Probably a bit of the brand new technology (source), a little bit of the cinematography, a little bit of how the original and its engine was such a huge force in the industry, namely with such popular mods and the eventual follow ups
I agree it wasn't a crazy interesting game to me and the game's pace was just a shade dull ... Copied to Clipboard!

Groundbreaking game play ideas.
Strong story with mimimal cut-scenes. Incredible attention to detail, level design, player training. Good use of color. Good sound/music design. Likable characters. Nice variety in the enemies and breaks in combat to keep a sense of scope. The Half Life series is an incredible teaching tool of how to design a game. Both Half-Life 1 and 2 were polished to a shine and theres a reason why everyone ripped them off for the following decade after they came out. Even fucking Tomb Raider added a gravity gun and secret giant tech facility following Half Life 2. Thats how powerful an influence it was --- ... Copied to Clipboard!

I thought the gunplay was generic and the antigrav gun was gimicky. It's crazy to call it generic Everyone else copied it because it was different... sure it became generic but on release it was ground breaking --- ... Copied to Clipboard!

Still has the best use of physics of any FPS I've ever played.

The game was a landmark title in...christ, 2004. Games have evolved since then but that game belongs in a museum.

I enjoyed Half-Life 2, but I had played Far Cry 1 before that and it was a much better game.

Gordon Freeman was their savior. Neckbeard nerd scientist turns into a wannabe Doomguy that becomes a badass alien killer with the crowbar as the melee. Weeb Cloud Strife was taking over and Westerners had to cling to a hero so they ran to Valve and HL2.

Half-Life 2 still nails a feeling of real atmosphere better than almost other FPS I've ever played as well. The stages feel like real places in my mind, and they all have very distinct feelings.
