James White's pet pit bull Darby jumped right into action when he heard his owner's cries for help as a shark's teeth sank deep into the flesh of the fisherman's leg.

"The first time I told somebody this, they were like, 'You're out of your mind, there's no way that happened,'" White told NBC Bay Area last week. "Then I showed him the pictures and I'm like, 'No it absolutely happened.'"

Three weeks ago, White, who is from Rohnert Park in California, was fishing on the shore of Bodega Bay in California's Sonoma County. He had left Darby, who is about 1-year-old and weighs approximately 100 pounds, in his parked vehicle, as the location was close to traffic.

While fishing, White felt a strong pull on the line and struggled to reel in his catch. He told NBC Bay Area that it took about 10 minutes. "The only way I think I was able to get the line back is because it was swimming towards me," he said.

Inadvertently, White had sunk his line into a 6 feet long sevengill shark. As the fisherman attempted to remove the hook from the massive fish, it flopped and sank its teeth into his leg.

"Immediately there was blood everywhere, the first bite punctured an artery," White said. "The pressure was intense."

Unable to remove the shark from his leg, White screamed for help, hoping some other fisherman a few hundred yards away would respond. But, a faithful friend heard his cries first and immediately jumped into action. Despite being inside the car, Darby found a way to open one of the doors and ran to rescue his friend from the jaws of the shark.

At first, Darby sunk his own teeth into the sharks gills, but that only made it bite down harder on White's leg. Realizing that plan of attack didn't work, the dog then grabbed the giant fish by the tail and pulled it off his master's leg. White was then able to get the creature back into the water, where it quickly swam away.

"If it wasn't for him I would have been a lot worse," White said affectionately of his canine pal.

That's a good point. Too lazy to train his dog to play in parameters. Took me a while to do it and he still tries to push it but it's fucked up to limit your dogs life experience because you don't wanna take the time to teach him how to stay safe.

Newsday says 40-year-old Stephen Neira bought Alex on Thursday after seeing him on a website for rescuing death row pets.

We were so excited to have a dog and be able to give it a new chance at life, said Neira, whose family home has a lush, expansive backyard perfect for an active dog, PIX11 reported.

Alex was scheduled to be put down in 22 minutes when Neira bought him at the Animal Care Centers of New York City, and took the 42-pound dog to his Patchogue home Sunday.

He ran up to the back door wagging his tail, the kids were there with their iPads taking pictures, said Neira. When I opened the back door he shot all the way through the house straight to the living room and then all the way back, and on his way out my oldest girl was standing in the corner and with no hesitation, no sniff, right from running jumped right in to go for her, right at the face.

Neira said he grabbed the dog, which had sunk its teeth into the 16-year-olds face and arm, which she had raised instinctively to protect herself.

are we sure it wasnt just the pitbull that bit him but he knew they'd put it down if they found out, but since he needed medical attention he made up a story about how he reeled in a 6 foot shark and a dog somehow got out of a locked car to save him?

Tbf *this* particular pit bull did a cool thing. But people forgetting all the bad interactions with humans the breed have as a whole is hard when considering this one instance.

That said I have no desire to see the breed wiped out. Nor do I have the desire to tolerate pit bull apologist that pretend it's all in the owner and nothing to do with the breed itself.
