The middle class thrive, the working class get more and more marginalized. You're not actually improving anything, you're merely offsetting dealing with the real problem by another decade or two.

I find it amusing that it is hated as much as its opposite, white flight.

Gentrification is better than white flight as at least the area isn't falling into disrepair.

Poor people and lower middle class get pushed out for upper middle class and some rich people it's basically society's way of saying "Hey, you're trash and we don't want you here so go away" if you're unlucky enough to get caught up in that, tough shit, life isn't fair and it's sole law is that those with money and power are your gods.

Pretty much. If rich people gave a shit, they could easily pick a different spot unlike the people who were raised there and couldn't find a way out until they were forced out into an even worse position. It's just the rich shitting on the unfortunate for their own convenience.

I live in Baton Rouge, where the well off area (St. George) is going to be on the ballot this fall to be its own city instead of being an unincorporated area like it is now. When it was in the proposal stage, the original map included a pretty rough area (Gardere). The people that live in that area were pissed, saying that if they became part of this new city then the racist people would gentrify their neighborhood.

Later down the road there was a new proposed map, and they left Gardere out. Except now the people of Gardere claim that the people in St. George are racist for not including them now because the tax money for this well off area will no longer be contributed to helping that area.

In theory it's a good idea and for long term it's good also, but what actually happens is that the poorer people just get pushed out and the community that they built is destroyed by people that didn't even take the time to help build it and are reaping the rewards of the community until they decide it doesn't fit what they want and replace it with something different that changes the neighborhood or community that brought them there in the first place.

Republicans don't do it by gentrification.

https://www.nytimes.com/2018/04/19/opinion/democrats-gentrification-cities-voters.html

The nations largest cities and metropolitan areas home to a majority of Democratic voters are at the forefront of the partys most vexing racial, ethnic and class conflicts.
[...]
One of the most expensive metropolitan areas in the country, San Francisco, is also one of the most Democratic sections of the country, (San Francisco County: Clinton 84.5 percent, Trump 9.2 percent). According to Romem, between 2005 and 2016, those moving into the San Francisco area had median household incomes averaging $12,639 a year more than the households of the families moving out, $70,015 to $57,376.
[...]
In firmly Democratic neighborhoods across the country, the economic status of those moving in and out began to shift radically starting at the beginning of this century.

Take, for example, Accounting for Central Neighborhood Change, 1980-2010, by Nathaniel Baum-Snow, an economist at the University of Toronto, and Daniel Hartley, an economist at the Federal Reserve in Chicago. They found that the core of the nations cities is being taken over by members of the affluent wing of the Democratic Party at the expense of the less affluent, disproportionately minority wing of the party:
[...]
A similar pattern has emerged in the urban West. Gentrification in the Bay Area, Portland and Seattle, Bruce Cain, a political scientist at Stanford, told me in an email, is definitely pushing disadvantaged populations out of old neighborhoods and into far-flung exurbs.

Within major metropolitan areas like Los Angeles, Cain continued,

the sorting is also between neighborhoods, with large nonwhite populations surrounded by white/Asian suburbs, and certain Latinos and Asians displacing blacks.

Upscale liberal whites who consider themselves committed to racial justice tend to be NIMBYists when it comes to their neighborhoods, Cain wrote, not living up to their affordable housing commitments and resisting apartment density around mass transportation stops.
[...]
As intraparty economic and racial divisions have increased within the Democratic coalition, the political power of the well-to-do has grown at the expense of racial and ethnic minorities.

Right now, a heated conflict has erupted within Democratic ranks in California over pending legislation (SB 827) that would override local zoning laws to allow developers to exceed height and density limits in return for an agreement to include more affordable housing units near transit hubs.

In very liberal Marin County (Clinton 77.3 percent, Trump 15.5 percent, median household income $100,310), elected officials of at least seven local municipalities have voted to oppose the legislation.

When I see people complain about it, Im not sure what they want exactly. People come in and build a community up to something better then what it was. Unfortunately that tends to push out people that originally lived there because they cant afford it any longer but it also cleans the area up, which I would consider a plus 100/100 times.

They don't build shit, they destroy what was there and either turn it into a parking lot or build a new community filled with people they like instead of the undesirables

I mean if you want to bring positive change to an impoverished community then instead of injecting expensive niche businesses into them why not raise the minimum wage, invest in local education, restructure the police force, and target the racist and oppressive practices that maintain the low standard of living.

People tend to get priced out of their homes and end up displaced. There's also the chance that the soul of neighborhood ends up being destroyed. The original spirit and vibe that originally attracted people there is replaced by overpriced chain stores. That is what causes the friction for a lot of long time residents in gentrified areas.
