I get to tell drunk morons that I can't sell them alcohol because it's past the legal cutoff time. Especially when it's only a couple of minutes past cutoff.

You don't have to lecture me. I know I'm a dick for taking pleasure in this.

But it's so damn satisfying when they start begging and I can straight-faced tell these entitled douches they're not important enough for me to jeopardize our liquor license and potentially go out of business and lose all the employees' livelihoods just because they want to get more drunk tonight.

It's like it's the first time some of these people have ever heard the word "no" when they wanted something. And it makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

AITA? Yeah. Yeah I am. And I like it. ^_^

When do you cut it off?

I got denied at 11:56 or 7 when it's midnight, that one annoyed me.

Didn't argue, though.

I love when obviously drunk people argue when the person refuses to sell.

Nobody in human history has ever made the cashier go 'Oh ok my mistake."

Our license allows us to sell until 1am.

Telling people no a couple minutes before that is generally acceptable because the transaction has to be finished before the cutoff, not just started.

EDIT: I usually tell people when they walk in that they have X minutes to get it in before cutoff, though. I'm not a total bastard about it. I let them know so they can grab something real quick and pay for it, then finish their other shopping if they need other stuff.

Fair enough.

State law around here is 12 for liquor stores, 2 for bars.

Bump. 'Cause I'm bored and I know I'm not the only one who enjoys minor power-flexes like this at work. XD

I live on the border of CT and NY so if CT closes their packies at 9pm I rest easily knowing I can get my booze just over the line in NY with no worries.

I honestly feel they should get rid of the cutoff. Ive seen way too many people in a rush already drunk to get to a store before that cutoff. Sure you'll have people getting alcohol all hours of the day but hopefully less will be speeding on top of drunk driving.

Anyways i thought modern registers wouldnt allow alcohol sells past the cutoff? Thats what ive been told when I tried way back in the day. They told me they literally couldnt do the transaction cause it wouldnt let them.

They lied. Well, maybe not. I'm sure some fancy registers could implement that. But 99% of them don't, and cashiers just say that because people accept it easier than just some random person telling them no.

The cutoff affects night shift workers. This means fewer drunks in high traffic....but it also means more drunks in no traffic.

Im just worried about drunk drivers being even more reckless than usual by speeding so they can make it in time.

Also more on topic ive never been annoyed being told no on the cutoff but I was annoyed once getting told no when it was like 10 minutes till the my could sell it. But I just told them to keep it behind the counter id be back. Stepped out smoked a cigg and then came back and bought it.

Night workers also have to deal with all those goddamn telemarketers if you have a landline.

If they dont have enough beer or backup liquor to last you to next day that's their fault, should have planned ahead.

Yeah the couple of times I went that late trying to get some it was a party situation. I always had myself covered but I refuesed to share my shit lol. Plus back then I intentionally drank unpopular things just so no one would ask. Always got some dipshit who would practically beg just to have A swallow of my drink as if that would do anything for them.
