Democrats lost a literally un-losable electionIt followed the exact model of the type of election that democrats lose. When the republicans run a candidate that speaks directly to the base and reaffirms everything they believe, and the democrats run a moderate candidate who is safe and calculated and geared towards appealing to corporatists and moderates, the dems lose by default. John Kerry (we picked him because hes a military guy! Hes not gonna rock the boat, a very agreeable middle ground, what could go wrong?) vs the war-time hawkish tax-cuttin Christian Texas cowboy. Al Gore (we picked him because hes a former southern centrist, again promising not to rock the boat but just continue the status quo, and remember he hadnt gone green yet) vs the guy I mentioned in the last paragraph. And of course... Hilldawg, the corporate elite powerhouse centrist lib. But guess which democrat won twice in recent history? By LANDSLIDE elections? A black man with a middle-eastern name who promised a [much more] progressive platform [than he actually delivered upon], who was labeled a socialist (although he wasnt one, the label stuck) who promised to end our wars, end Guantanamo, undo the Bush legacy, and who publicly stood up for the black Americans being killed by our police. Its almost as if the way to win an election is to not look anything like your opposition. --- ... Copied to Clipboard!

But guess which democrat won twice in recent history? By LANDSLIDE elections? Obama was fairly centrist, and there really aren't any issues that he was more liberal on than Joe Biden is now. Remember that when Obama was elected, he didn't even support gay marriage. By modern standards, his 2008 positions would be fairly conservative. The difference with Obama was that he was charismatic as hell. --- - The Admiral ... Copied to Clipboard!

By modern standards, his 2008 positions would be fairly conservative.I generally agree with all of the above, but for the perspectives of the mainstream voter, they were not getting that message. If you were moderately right wing, you were sold on the idea from every angle that Obama was going to be the furthest left president in a generation. And for Obamas base, both old and young, they were filling in the blanks in his overly-general charismatic words with the idea that he was going to do the progressive thing. Most people who leaned further left in 2008, such as myself, were drooling over Nader but bit the bullet for a president that we at least figured could do better than most other options. But for the mainstream the message was a very general sense of leftwards motion from both his typical supporters and detractors. --- ... Copied to Clipboard!
