Old wizard dude looks utterly ridiculous with a laughable voice trying to emulate gravitas, but we'll see how the movie goes.

Lol? Why would the door dust the scientist lady? It's like the movie's trying to get in on mcu's infinity war event last year with dusting snap.

I liked Chuck but goddamn he looks wrong for the part. His head is too small for the rest of his body. Captain Marvel (or is it Shazam now?) is supposed to be a Superman Expy but Chuck doesn't really have the square jaw manly man look, he's more the plucky sidekick that throws quips the audience loves.

Speaking of love the sympathetic crutches kid is pretty sweet and likable.

Lol I'm a teensy weensy bit rooting for the villain more because billy is kinda annoying and I just really like mark strong in any role he's in.

Yeah that was a fun movie.

I liked how I was hoping we'd see crutches kid turn into captain marvel jr and mary turn into captainess marvel (since I already saw those characters in the brave and the bold cartoon show) in maybe an after credits scene or something.

But instead, the movie completely shocks me by making ALL the kids turn into captain marvels! 6 shazaming captain marvels, that's almost power rangersish! It was quite adorable.

Lol at the credits completely riffing on dc's heroes, that was good too.

Some other things I liked and notes:

Since I'm familiar with Captain Marvel from JLU and also Batman: The Brave and the Bold (2nd greatest Batman show of all time, you should really watch it) I was introduced to a few elements from Shazam, like Dr Savannah and also the carterpillar that talks.

So it was delightful when the beginning had a caterpillar in a glass case and then delightfully hilarious when the after credits showed the carterpillar talking with the voice box, just like the cartoon! Really glad they embraced that.

I also think they referenced Black Adam with the origin story. I was hoping we'd see him in the after credits as a sequel hook but alas. Don't know if the rock movie is still on or not.

First live action DC movie I've seen since that garbage man of steel movie and finally one I liked. Shame it didn't seem to make as much at the box office as you'd typically expect from comic book blockbusters. It's amazing how much better man of steel's costume looks without the color filter. Still weird and not like the original, but so much better, more vibrant and colorful. That little cameo was funny.

An all around fun movie, I'd watch a sequel.

Captain Marvel (or is it Shazam now?)

I otherwise loved the movie, but that grated on my nerves. They officially changed his name to Shazam a few years ago... maybe because Marvel Comics got pissy that they accidentally named their company after a competetor's IP and only with Disney's backing could feasibly win a lawsuit?

But for whatever reason, the movie decides to sidestep the issue completely and does it in the most awkward way possible--by not even naming the hero. I loved the way they're constantly trying to come up with something that doesn't sound stupid lol but literally never in the movie is he officially given a name. Closest thing is "Red Cyclone," which not only isn't his name but also steps on Red Tornado's toes. Ugh.

The word Shazam has always been closely associated with the property, but if you'll notice, the cover mentions that it is a magic word and still says Captain Marvel on it too.

Accidentally lol. They knew what they were doing.

And as much as I wish he could be called Captain Marvel (he can, but probably never will again for branding reasons), its ultimately DCs fault.

They were pissy that Captain Marvel was stomping Supes in sales so they sued Fawcett and caused the comic to shutter. Captain Marvel did nothing for a while.

DC eventually bought the character but sat on the name so long that Marvel Comics had already gotten the copyright because hey, were Marvel, so why shouldnt we have a captain marvel?

Which sort of makes sense, but at the same time, DC doesnt have Captain Detective Comics so it probably wasnt really necessary. >_>

DC has the rights to Captain Marvel, they're just not allowed to use it as a title (hence the above cover) or in promotional material.

I would say check out Wonder Woman for sure. A lot of people also love Aquaman but I would call that movie just 'ok'.

Only watch the remainder for the goof and if you're high (BvS, Suicide Squad, Justice League).

Im seeing so many errors in this topic so I just have to correct it.

Timely Comics was created in January 12, 1939. They published Marvel Comics #1 in October 1939.
They changed name to Atlas Comics in November 1951.
They changed the name to Marvel Comics in February 19, 1961.

Fawcett Comics was founded in 1939, and they introduced Captain Marvel in February 1940.

National Allied Publications was founded in autumn 1934. Detective Comics, Inc. was formed in 1937. They merged into National Comics Publications in September 30, 1946, and changed name to DC Comics in 1977.
Superman was first introduced in June 1938.

The Captain Marvel comics outsold the Superman comics, so DC decided to sue Fawcett for copyright infringement. Since some of the Captain Marvel stories were copies of some Superman stories, DC won. The comic market started to decline so Fawcett decided to stop publishing comics and sell most of their characters to Charlton Comics (founded 1945). DC would later buy most of the Charlton Comics characters in 1983 and Charlton Comics went defunct in 1986.
Since they stopped using the Captain Marvel trademark, they lost it and some publishers decided to try earning some money on it.
MF Enterprises (founded 1966) released their own Captain Marvel in 1966, which was an android superhero from space with the ability to split his body into smaller pieces. Marvel sued them because they believed that they owned the right to the word Marvel, they settled out of court and only five issues were made.

Marvel decided to snag the rights to Captain Marvel, and published their own Captain Marvel comic in 1968, with the superhero Mar-Vell (the comic was still named Captain Marvel). To be able to keep the rights to Captain Marvel, they released a few comics here and there. The superior version is clearly the Amalgam universe one where DC and Marvel characters merges into new characters, Captain Marvel merges with Captain Marvel and creates a new Captain Marvel.

Anyway, superhero comics started to get popular in the middle 60s again and Fawcett wanted to get back in the game again, but they were not allowed to publish their Captain Marvel characters (the settlement from 1953 included that they were not allowed to publish anything with the Marvel family at all). So they did the second best thing, they licensed the characters to DC, and they started to release comics with them in 1973. Since Marvel Comics owned the rights to Captain Marvel now, they had to call him Shazam, with the subtitle "The Original Captain America".
Marvel disliked this of course, so DC was forced to change it to "The Worlds Mightiest Mortal" in December 1974.
In 1994 DC bought the rights to the Shazam family.

I guess writers are unable to change that.

What's that? They are?!? And they did?!?

I enjoyed the movie but I wasn't that fond of the direction they went with Dr. Sivana. They just turned him into another "villain with similar powers to the hero." I guess I should have figured that since they went with Mark Strong. He doesn't exactly scream small frail mad scientist now does he?

Lol right? I noticed what they were doing almost immediately. Plus I'm pretty sure there was already a red cyclone character introduced in young justice, as part of the red tornado family like his brother or something.
