The thing isn't a remake, it was a different take on a common source material.

No, it isn't considered a remake, same as how IT isn't a remake.

You can't remake a Bruce Campbell movie. Nobody can fill those shoes.

Technically it's never made clear if it's a remake or sequel. Ash isn't in it but the plot points are very similar. Less campy than the original though

I think most thought it was decent, just not amazing. Nightmare on Elm Street was the really maligned one.

The thing that baffled me about that one was that they marketed it as a remake. Apart from the fact that it had Jason in it, which is understandable since he is Friday the 13th now, they literally tell the story of the first movie as a ghost story around a campfire in the beginning. Maybe they just didn't want to call it Friday the 13th 11 but it was just a sequel like any other.

The Invasion of the Body Snatchers remake with Donald Sutherland

Oh yeah, that's probably the best horror remake because its equal to the masterful original while also doing its own unique thing.

Its rather sad that every generation since then hasn't had its own equally brilliant but unique Body Snatchers movie. That'd be a heck of a series! Instead we seem to have a less than brilliant (and apparently less than peak Ferrara) Abel Ferrara effort and a completely forgotten 2000s one following up those two.

In a shallow pool like this, of both horror fans, and remakes of horror movies, I don't think it's necessary to nitpick what's an actual remake and what's close to a remake but not quite a remake. It just seems senseless to stir up an argument over something so trivial.

With that said..

I'm mostly nitpicking because if The Thing counts then it isn't even a fair fight, lol. Adore that movie.

Dawn of the Dead and Night of the Living Dead are both solid remakes, imo only the day of the dead remake doesn't hold up.

Oh I do also, I was trying to think of something that wasn't The Thing because I figured it would be the majority answer.
