It's a tie between FFXV and Batman: Arkham Knight for me

FFXV didn't live up to the years of built up hype of "Versus XIII" and Arkham Knight was a disappointing conclusion to an amazing franchise with too many tank battles and zero real boss fights

I did not purchase or play games that looked to be disappointing from the get go (Battlefront EA, Anthem, Fallout 76, Andromeda etc.)

FFXV and KH3 were the first ones that came to mind.
Square Enix just can't seem to make quality games anymore, I guess.

I want to say God of War (PS4) disappointed me, but not because it was bad, but because I wanted the story to keep going. It felt short to me. Still a great game, though.

i had to really think, and there may be worse ones than i can remember right now. but as far as i can recall, probably Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura. i love CRPGs, and i love the setting and tone of the game, and that opening cinematic with the striking string ensemble backing was a very unique and enticing start to the game..... but the more and more i played it, the more and more i could focus on nothing but all the ways that it didn't measure up to the Baldur's Gate series and other more polished CRPGs. i couldn't even finish it.

edit: oh! so either this, or FF13

huh, yeah, Arcanum. wanted to love that game so bad, loved the world building and character options.... but it just felt SOOO unpolished and the combat just seemed broken

WWF Smackdown Just Bring It for PS2. I was HIGHLY anticipating it for most of 2001 and couldn't stop thinking about all of the possibilities there would be on this new console generation. I literally laid awake in bed at night for weeks in the summer thinking about it.

BOY was I wrong. After the amazing intro:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zSqET6feOaQ" data-time="

The actual graphics and gameplay were a letdown. The roster was completely outdated too since about 40 wrestlers debuted and almost none were featured in the game.

I just picked it up and have only done the first chapter so far. I'm hoping to enjoy it because I loved the first one so much. I played it non-stop while I was deployed to Afghanistan.

Probably Jak and Daxter: The Lost Frontier.

In the back of my mind, I thought it might not be the best title. Naughty Dog have moved on, the PS2 version is just a PSP upscale job, and the studio handling it is an unproven start-up with a couple of trash titles under its belt. But I assured myself with the knowledge that the company had Naughty Dog alumni, and even if it wasn't as good as the originals, it would be nice to see Jak and Daxter again. If the game did well, then maybe there would be a future for the franchise.

The game was insultingly bad. The loading screens have old Jak and Daxter concept art on them, Keira looks like Michael Jackson, there's a piss poor justification as to why Jak can't use his eco powers, they've overhauled Jak's playstyle to incorporate a staff which is clunky and terrible... The list goes on. The worst part of the game is Dark Daxter, which has a trash design, a stupid voice with even worse jokes than usual and a complete and utter non-sequitur of an ending to his story arc.

There's a cutscene near the start of the game where Jak's wearing a coat that's in one of his concept art pieces instead of his finalised design. It's just one more sloppy detail that tarnishes an already garbage game. I was so disappointed when I spotted it, and I had already felt my hopes slipping away before this point.

One thing I did enjoy was the air combat. Did it belong in a Jak and Daxter game? Not really. Does it stick out like a sore thumb compared to the other gameplay? Absolutely. But it's genuinely a lot of fun, at least compared to the rest of the gameplay, and it had one of the more interesting mechanics I'd seen in a while. You send Daxter over on a rope to dismantle the enemy plane as it's flying, and he brings a bunch of scrap back with him for you to upgrade your own plane - it's pretty charming. The one thing that made the game worth playing, even remotely, was an unnecessary gameplay shift that had nothing to do with the series.

I bought this game and Drawn to Life 2 on launch, for a good $60 each. I spent a significant amount of my birthday money buying these two games, and they basically bastardized everything I love about the games that came before them. I didn't buy another brand new video game until 2015, with Metal Gear Solid 5 - and while the story was weak and unsatisfying in that game, I actually got a lot of hours out of it and enjoyed the game a whole lot.

Jak and Daxter: The Lost Frontier was a game that fuelled my cynicism for years. I think one reason why I like YouTube shows like the GVMERS documentaries and What Happened by Matt McMuscles is because of this game - I want to get into the guts of a game and hear about its development, I want to hear about the talent behind the product and any stories they have to tell. I want to know what fuels the development of a third-rate sequel by what amounts to a C-team of former employees, and how they've been able to cobble together games like this.

I ended up playing it through a few times because I needed to justify my purchase, and I ended up enjoying some of it. But God, this is a turd of a game compared to the previous titles.

There are SO many NES games that had brilliant and unique ideas, but failed in their execution. That was one of them. I guess it was more difficult to program more ambitious games then.

^ as much as I enjoyed the game, it was unfinished, much of the mission structure was repetitive (especially sub-missions), the world was mostly empty outside of (sub)missions, outposts were constantly re-used, and with the exception of one or two encounters, there were no traditional boss fights.
