One thing ive loved about Octopath Traveler is that its just people on their own personal journeys, there isnt some big evil thing threatening to take over the world.

Define "Fate of The World"

I think in both Baldurs Gate and Dragon Age Origins The World is going to be fine. Just the one country is fucked.

And in FFX nothing is threatening to take over the world. The world will live on in a constant cycle. It's just it will be a constant cycle of death and despair.

Do you have to play an RPG though?

I mean This War of Mine, Spec Ops the Line, Shenmue, Silent Hill 2 are all great games with personal journies where the world is not in danger but they are not RPGs

actually @UnfairRepresent in final fantasy X seymore wants to become sin to destroy all of spira and then when he finds his way inside he wants to find a way to control sin to see his dream of destroying the world come to fruition so yes the fate of the world is in jeapordy in final fantasy X. and also since they destroyed the way to get the final aeon sin is now unstoppable and will just keep killing with no calm so either way the world is in jeapordy

That's a half truth.

No Final Aeon doesn't mean the world is ruined. The Calms are immensely short. It just means less joy. Sin in of itself cannot wipe everyone out, it's too mindless. Think about it, if this wasn't the case then Seymour's plan would be pointless.

You're right about Seymour though. Although his plan does hinge entirely on Yuna so you're kinda helping him

The vast majority of wrpgs don't deal with world ending stuff. That's mostly a trope of JRPGs.

iirc i'm pretty sure the stakes weren't quite that high in 1 though

From what I remember, the stakes aren't quite "save the galaxy" level for most of the game, but don't you learn about a weapon of mass destruction towards the end? It's been a while since I've played it too though.

Edit: I was thinking of the Star Forge.

Breath of Fire III, well, I guess. I don't much like it myself, but some people do, and the stakes are fairly low.

The Suikoden series of games is all about wars between countries/territories on a single planet. The fate of the world itself isn't ever in any real danger, just the people of whatever war-torn region that game's story takes place in.

The Fallout series starts with the fate of the world pretty much already screwed.

yeah maybe not 2

iirc i'm pretty sure the stakes weren't quite that high in 1 though

been awhile since i've played either, to be fair

In 1 a a planet is destroyed so arguably the stakes are higher than just world

In 2 I'm not what the villain's plan would have resulted in but it would overall affect the universe maybe

In 1 Malak was going to use the Star Forge to mass produce an army that would allow him to overthrow the Republic and rule in their place. May not be "the end of the galaxy" but preventing a powerful + evil dictator from rising to power is certainly high stakes.

As for 2, I don't remember if Kreia or Sion's plans were that bad, but Nihilus was certainly a threat to the entire galaxy given that he was essentially feeding off the life force of everything around him and supposedly would have consumed the entire galaxy if he kept going.

In Octopath Traveler, the fate of the world is definitely in jeopardy by the final final boss. And a ton of people's lives are in peril from a few of the other final bosses. It's just at the start of each story that the stakes are so low.

Yeah, IIRC it was basically a country emulating the Spanish Empire trying to harness the power of the moon to activate the most powerful Giga and conquer everyone else.

Resonance of Fate

Hell, it's only due to events years ago that you and the final boss ended up on opposite sides, and while not necessarily sympathetic it's at least understandable why he did what he did as well as why he acted the way he did.

Vendetta: Curse of Raven's Cry - You're a pirate and you do pirate things. Also you have a raven that can pilfer rings and candles and shit off people as you're bombing their ship to hell >_> Also it sucks really badly but it's fun.
