I remember listening to a discussion from Jordan Petersen on Nazis and he says the reason why a lot of Nazis joined and went the lengths for what they did was not out of malice, but out of respect for their own comrades. The mentality is that their buddies have to go and do such dirty work, how can they possibly leave them behind? Then he recommended this book: Christopher Browning - Ordinary Men, which explains the psychology in which Nazis were made. I haven't read it but I plan on it. Honestly, I believe people are far more influenced by society and their environment than they give credit to. I can see the point of the trial, but I feel treating ring leaders and subordinates of this scale as equals comes off as disingenuous. You have to be abnormal to go against the curve and normal people don't do this. It was basically a group of US soldiers who haven't seen any battles since they were deployed, been battling just the trap infested environment while constantly hearing hearsay about how dangerous the Vietnamese enemies, and when they finally got the opportunity to go into the battlefield against the enemies, they found out it was a false info and the village they were sent to were made up of plain unarmed civilians. You know what happened next? The authority of that group took the first shot and all hell broke loose. A complete horror story, women being assaulted, men mercilessly killed off, babies tossed into the air and caught... with bayonets. A soldier who was involved was interviewed when he came back and his remarks? "It's just one of them things" The truth of the matter is that not all of us are shonen heroes who always fights for what they believe in regardless of the circumstance. And those who do contribute to these incidents are far more similar and human than what is led to be believed. It is an invalid defense but Nuremberg proved that many Nazis actually went far beyond their orders to be cruel and murderous. Many of them were, in fact, NOT following orders.
