Though I think it's more that they want an escape from real life and other media where they're forced to realize that women and minorities are not just footnotes. Might have something to do with the relative lack of female protagonists and almost complete lack of minority (especially Black) protagonists in games, and why they seem to react so strongly against both if a game is shown with either or both in major roles.
