As the anniversary of Switch Online approaches and they have to convince the original subscribers to renew, Nintendo has rolled out a new feature: Free Full Game trials

For a full, pre-scheduled week you can download and play whatever game they put up, and if you decide to purchase it, your progress will carry over.

The first game theyre doing this with is Mario Tennis Aces, which is up for the next week as of today.

No word on how often they will do these trials yet.

I take it Nintendo doesn't just offer free games for a limited time like Sony and Microsoft?

Mario Maker 2 is the only real engagement I've had with Nintendo's online service and it's thoroughly convinced me that they don't deserve any money for it. Lag, baffling exclusion of common sense features and laughably bad friend integration would be frustrating even if this was free (which it is for me atm), forget actually paying for it.

I thought you lost them after the month ended. Its one of the two reasons I dont subscribe to the service.

I think that was back in March. They also did it even more recently with Mario Tennis Aces, or at least I already had a "Special Online Demo" installed on my Switch that I never played that I downloaded some time between then and now.

Not sure if that differs any from what they're letting people play for free now.

Special Demo was just that, a demo that only let you access a handful of characters/modes. Right now is the full game.

I'll use this to complete the story mode and count another game "beat" but that's probably it.

That's some PS3-era PS+ functionality right there. I wish they still did that. Looking at the list full game trials on PS4 and yikes!
