Like 3 hours ago I was feeling pretty bad, so I took some anti-depressant medication that I had been waning off of and magically everything is different even though reality is exactly the same.

Sounds to me like you need your medication. Don't feel shame just because you need meds. That's what they're there for. ^_-

I'm not me when I'm on them, I can't think as clear and they can lead to me being distracted easier an less productive.

I don't know what to do about it. :/

That's dangerous mindset. Part of the meds role is to make you stable so you you won't hit all those lows AND highs. If you feel it isn't working out just tell your psychiatrist and try something else. Don't quit meds on a whim.

It's pretty shitty, yeah. Almost on the same level as drinking to forget about your problems or anxiety/depression. You're not actually getting better or feeling better, you're just temporarily under the influence of drugs. So you just become a drugged version of yourself and all you can do is hope that's more productive than the sober you.

Any time I've ever taken psychoactive drugs there's always this incredibly disconcerting feeling that I'm not myself (I'm the drug) and typically the loss of true natural emotions and working memory deficits, as well as other side effects completely put me off them.

I recognize that some people absolutely need them and they help them push through their daily lives. It's just a pretty bleak picture overall to me. I don't know really anyone that doesn't have a love/hate relationship with the drugs they're taking.
