Maybe to host other people's ascii too. Never built a website before, but I troubleshoot websites all day and I have free hosting because of that, so I figured I'd give it a try.



That one's new, but I'm going through my old ASCII folder and will be posting old some stuff in this topic. All screenshots because no way am I going through the hassle of making them postable.





I guess Word formats spaces or colons differently now than when I worked on some of these.

I'm curious - assuming you made it, how did you do so? Like what's the process? I doubt it's as simple as "stick this pic in a program, get ASCII out the other side"

Mm, I have one or two that needed 3 posts. I think even some 4 post ones. Course even if you manage to post them nowadays, GameFAQs started added a big blank space between posts (with usernames set to the left side) so even the old archived stuff doesn't look great. One day Allen will pay for his crimes against ASCIInity!

The easiest way is just to trace it. Word document, set image to background, type over it. The tricky part was getting the font right because I never really got a straight answer on what the proper font for GameFAQs was. It's Arial but is it 9 or 10? I usually went with 9.5 and it worked ok, though sometimes you had to adjust your zoom level.

Also the site IS live, I just didn't want to post it because of the advertising rule. I'm publishing stuff from the tumblr blog I have (which is easy enough to search online for), but I'm also adding what few ASCII tutorials are still live, and allowing registered users to submit their own stuff. Free requests can also be made.

I guess my bigger goal is to make the site popular enough that users who didn't grow up with this stuff can experience it, and maybe make their own. With the formatting rules on GameFAQs changed, it's really not feasible to make new stuff to post here, but I like the Patamon style so I'm largely sticking to it. I like seeing ASCII art of all kinds though, like this:

Maybe, but I don't think this style really lends itself to animation like the fixed-width styles do. I'd be fine with just bringing more attention to hand-done ASCII art.

Fixing some display issues on the site right now. I'm also keeping gfascii.tumblr.com up to date as a sort of mirror, though it only has the posts and not the tutorials.

On that note, I'm thinking of making a tutorial myself, for all two people who want to learn to make the stuff.

Updated the post times, now going through them one by one to fix the older posts having tiny thumbnails. I used a deprecated plugin to import all my posts from the tumblr, which worked pretty well aside from the thumbnails.

Ngl it made more sense to keep doing this when they were postable and you could mix and match parts of ASCII for added hilarity. And I do still enjoy ASCII'ing memes.

But I keep doing it for the reason I suppose everyone else did, because it has a unique look to it, even though this style is almost all tracing. And I really, really miss ASCII art. It was one of those things that made GameFAQs's antiquated message boards worth keeping around. And giving that up just to make things look better to mobile users and to try and keep up with the rest of the Internet is not a fair trade imo. This is old man talk coming from a 25 year old, but the Internet is becoming more and more homogenuous and we're losing unique corners like this message board for very little, very corporate gain. Also, there's a lot more hate and not enough honest creativity (because it's been driven out by the hate). Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk.

There's just a small number of ways I create slopes so it's not really that difficult. Same with special characters. I guess one thing I do is try to not use actual letters and numbers very often if I can help it. I do abuse '' like a madman though.
