some losers can practice for thousands of hours and still be at a novice level

not everyone responds to practice

there are some people that are just going to be bad at everything no matter how hard they try

The phrase still has merit even if not everyone benefits equally from practice. You're not going to get good at something if you don't practice.

I really don't think this is true. Most people just give up if they don't improve rapidly, especially losers

I agree with the title -- it should be "practice makes permanent."

but the posts are just asinine. in the case of music and other art forms specifically, this is objectively false. there are not people who get good without practice, and there are not people who don't get good in spite of practice.

It depends how you practice. For art, if you just draw people nonstop for years, you will improve but not as much as a person who practices drawing people while using specific approaches and techniques.

This is a a thing with a lot of artists, so I've heard from a pro artist friend. They've been drawing their whole lives, but never actually learned how to draw the right way. A lot get frustrated when someone who's only started drawing with the class they join end up with better results.

Don't forget that plenty bad habits can be picked up with bad practice. Gotta actually make sure that when you do practice, you're finding what you can use to improve and trying to find good ways to do so.

Let's use video games as an example. Skip the tutorial and go straight into the hardest difficulty in a genre you've never played? You'll not even know what you're supposed to do, much less what you need to do to improve.

That's a problem I've had. I used to get drawing books when I was younger in the 90s, but didn't take classes until a decade ago. I wanted to take art classes in high school, but my dad pressured me into doing band instead to be more well-rounded.

If I were giving advice to a kid starting out, I would encourage them to practice drawing lines and tone, then learn about perspective, then learn drawing boxes, spheres, cylinders, before progressing to people.

In my experience, it's not that anyone can be perfect, or the highest of their art, but practice will get you to at least 80% regularly, and close to the top at least once in a blue moon. Talent makes up the difference in consistency, more than it does the very ceiling.

The phrase should be "practice makes habit".

If you practice with bad habits, you won't magically improve. You need to self-reflect and ask for feedback from others, nip bad habits in the bud, and of course practice.

You can repeat something a thousand times and you wont improve, unless you see what you did wrong and improve upon it yourself.

X boss in Y game isnkt easy. You keep going at it with the same strategy and it always ends the same way wih failure. The moment you improve on your strategy you start to see different results.

This is why some practice for a short time and get better at something compared to others. Because they do not repeat the same thing over and over and hope for a different result.
