I can swim, as in I can make my way around a swimming pool. But I'm not at all what you would call a skilled swimmer.

I never understood not being able to swim. I taught myself at around four or five. I've always just kind of...swam.

You can just sorta 'plank' and mange to halfass it.
Backfloating is stupidly simple, and even going fetal potion works about as well.

Panic flailing just means you're going to drown, quickly.

Not really, it's not required or mandatory.

Nothing that I can think of would require me to have to swim. Especially if I never went to a beach or pool which is easy.

Imagine this scenario TC

You are on a plane, and the engine blows. You grab a parachute but struggle to get both arms in, the ground is getting closer, finally, in a last effort, you get your arm in, pull the chute, and with 2 seconds to spare, it opens and it spares you from fatal impact.

BUT YOU SNAG A TREE! Luckily there is water underneath you about 20 feet down. The branch begins to snap and you realize the waters underneath you are rapids. AND THERES A WATERFALL!

You plunge into the water, bumping rocks along the way and wash 30 feet down into rocky waters. You float down river as you come to, somehow surviving this entire ordeal.

But OH NO! the water is 6 foot deep and you are only 5 foot 10! You drown to death because you don't know how to swim.

I went to swimming lessons, but it was basically a waste.

I struggled through it and feel bad thinking about it.

I can basically keep myself afloat and paddle, but the whole proper swimming thing just never clicked with me. I don't know why...

It might work now that I'm older, but I don't really water anyways.

Wasn't natural for me. I mean, I could always doggy paddle, but proper swimming didn't click for me until I saw a shark while 3 miles out from the shoreline. I learned to swim real fast just then.

From my own perspective it's something to do with coordination and forcing your body to stay calm. If you can't do the whole head turn breathe part it becomes difficult really fast. This takes some practice and some just can't seem to do it. I personally haven't been in a pool for a very long time and never really practiced. Could probably do it if I tried, but I'm not seeking a pool... it has dead wasp and leaves in it. ):

The other is panic of sorts, some just shut down or can't control themselves. That part is a bit harder, as it's psychological.

Those are the only 2 excuses I can think of. Psychological barrier or lack of coordination.

You said its essential in Florida

Florida is still a land based state. You walk around on land and dont need to swim to go to the grocery, go out to eat, buy things, etc

Swimming is only essential for hobbies/activities that involve swimming. Which can be fun but not vital to know throughout your life like reading, writing and math skills. Really not hard to figure out

Then, we need to teach people how to dead float, because the instinct to do so has been lost.

Not quite

Reading and writing are necessities for everyday life. Swimming is not

That doesnt make it any less weird to not know how to swim. Its like not knowing how to ride a bike or drive a car. Sure you can survive without knowing, but its weird. And sad.

It does actually

Because if you're not interested in going into pools or water parks then who gives a fuck. You should find things that are actually important in day-to-day life to feel superior about

It will probably come up in conversation at some point and then everyone will be like "wtf? How could they not know how to swim lmao"

My body fat distribution basically makes swimming harder for me than most. Like, I can't even do that back float thing for more than 10 seconds because my upper half starts to sink. And I'm doing the breathing right, relaxed arms spread eagle, etc. Just, endurance runners body so the part of me that floats best throws off my ability to passively maintain equilibrium.

When's the last time it's flooded near you and how much warning in advance was there? If it's been awhile and there was ample warning, you'd be correct, there's no reason.

Fetal potion always floats.

You are less dense than water, but not by much. An adult human has 4-6 liters of air, which is vastly less dense than water, unless you flail like an idiot and fill those liters with water.
