It's probably the people who only go to see a few "event" movies in the theater every year and nothing else. Explains many of the problems I and probably many others have with the current direction of the franchise.

There are about a thousand movies that come out every year in theaters and tens of thousands of hours of television to watch annually, yet you continue to obsess about a movie you don't like as if it is unique, revelatory information. Go watch something else. You aren't discovering trends. You're lagging behind in this bizarre echo chamber of your own creation, hollering about a movie that isn't even the last one released in a franchise. This is as cold of a take as possible right now, right up there with "Jar Jar killed Star Wars" and "Shia killed Indiana Jones."

Wake up, try experiencing something that was released in the last 18 months.

You could MAYBE make a claim that Empire and Return are event movies, but the earliest event films would be TV films.

Yeah I was referring to Empire and Jedi. Were those not massive blockbuster events?

Movies didn't have a weekly event-style release until much later. That came about due to the fall of television as appointment viewing outside of sports, and it also has arisen thanks to the glut in the number of theatrically released films, which is constantly rising while trying to cater to an audience increasingly torn between many sources of entertainment.

Blockbusters were different in the 80s. They had longer legs and more staying power, because competition in theaters was nowhere near as fierce nor were audiences as prone to be distracted by newer things as they are now.

I wasnt really considering release frequency as criteria for being a cultural "event movie." Though I do agree that kind of movie is much more popular and frequent due to Disney and Marvel and others cashing in on the blockbuster model, it's something that the OT obviously also did.

If you want to structure it around week-to-week serial viewing and the rise and fall of TV, sure. That's something I hadn't considered at all and is an interesting angle. But I'm not sure I agree. I'm was thinking "event of the summer" type movies when I said that.

Edit: saw the edit, yeah, it's different but I still think it's the same model. The frequency of them has just changed.

I think there is a difference between tentpole movies and the style of event viewing that exists now, personally. To me, you are describing built-up hype machines that used to be one of three or four major releases in a year for a theater. Maybe even fewer. I think that "event" tends to suggest that the timing is key. Culturally significant movies used to not be "events" so much as they are now, at least in my pointless studying of box office numbers over the years.

When you cant even taste the actual burger that's a problem. Like when you cant actually taste the initial ingredients of the fucking pizza when you just drown it in a million other things. The thing is that unless you have the worlds fucking thinnest burger this is likely not going to happen, which is really the key. Most pizza is fairly thin and it's a lot easier for the core of the pizza to be masked or hidden by toppings if you put enough on. This is not saying the person does not like pizza, but maybe they would elect not to eat pizza if they could not put said toppings on it to a point where they actually tasted the pizza. It's like someone saying they like coffee... but only if they put 20 teaspoons of sugar in it. Or if you are still insistent on saying the belief that it doesn't matter what's actually on the pizza... it's still pizza. Then you have to concede that there are just too many feasible combinations to make it fair to just lump them into one dish. What if someone only liked green tea and disliked every other type of tea? Does this person like tea?

Also, the actual preparation of a burger and the toppings are done differently from pizza. Pizza toppings are cooked with the pizza so you actually have to take into account the overall integrity of the Pizza there. With burgers, almost all additional things minus the cheese is added post-cooking so you have an easier time of maintaining the core of the dish.
