I'm almost at the end of Part 1 (didn't see Edelgard being the Flame Emperor coming, but that revelation does make me feel like it's better not to pick Black Eagles first, so I'm glad I'm Golden Deer. Just seems more interesting coming from an outside perspective, while also making me more curious to see how it goes down in a later playthrough), and I'm making the last minute decision to recruit the characters that Claude can support with, since it seems like now or never more or less. Luckily Petra and Annette joined immediately without me having any supports with them, but Ingrid's making me work for it. Lots of gifts and a tea time later, and I have her at B. Hopefully it's not too late and I'll get the prompt from her before the end of the month.

I went to Blue Lions next because I felt like Golden Deer worked best as the "recruit everyone from the other houses" playthrough, both due to tone and it being longest.

I feel like I'm the only person who did Golden Deer first. I didn't keep up with any of the marketing, I just thought that Edelgard and Dimitri playing tug-of-war over the MU was dumb, so I went with the guy who outright said he wanted to make friends over time.

Also, please tell me that Chapter 22 is the last fucking chapter of this route. I'm getting exhausted with filler fights against bandits.

I also went Golden Deer first. Sounded like the only team that wasn't a monarchy, so I picked them first. BE just kinda rubbed off on me as "kinda bad guys" of the three, but I don't really think that's true at all. Blue team seemed lame from top to bottom.

I just beat the Black Eagles route. Fuck the church. I'm super digging this game and I can't wait to start another playthrough! I have no clue how these pairings are decided, but here's what I ended up getting:

Finished Golden Deer and now starting on Black Eagles.

I felt like I was playing Tacthack on that final boss map, what with how it ended up just being a straightforward army slugfest rather than a fight against time versus a giant demon-dragon raid boss like I assume the other routes are probably gonna end with. I really liked that.

Just finished the Golden Deer route after 45 hours. I really liked it, but I'm also glad it's over. Especially the monastery parts after the time skips were too much. But even just going for all the dialogue and automatic teaching means about an hour per month, not including the fighting. I think I wasn't the only one, because I saw a high percentage of people selecting the rest option for the last couple of months.

General story spoilers:

It did all feel a bit disconnected. The feud between the empire and the kingdom isn't really ever developed. The Blue Lions really only appear one time and Dimitri is pretty much a non-factor in this route. Edelgards motivations are barely touched upon as well. The beasts weren't really explained either, nor if the church was (somewhat) evil or not. Though at least we killed the people behind all of it.

That said, I really enjoyed the first part, Claude carries that so well in his role as the leader of a misfit student detective squad. And the other students are great too. It then all comes together in a good climactic battle... and post time skip, the monastery is still mostly there, and the situation isn't great in the Alliance, but it's not terrible. (I mean, at least it didn't get divided up like the Kingdom.) Then Claude and his merry band come together again and go on an heroic campaign to defeat the Empire, unite Fodlan and eliminate racism/xenophobia. Classic good guy stuff, and while a bit of nuance or some dilemmas would have been appreciated, it still was an enjoyable story. Really funny and quite lighthearted. I have a feeling that the other two routes are a lot heavier.

Not everyone ended up being as well developed character wise, but I did end up liking everyone on the route. There were some nice surprises as well. Especially Lysithea as I didn't care at all for her pre time skip , Hilda somewhat, Marianne redeemed herself a lot as well, and Lorenz too. The others were a bit too tropy or too focused on a single core issue, without there being much development. Then again, some of the development is sometimes only found in a single support, so I might have missed it. I didn't really recruit that many people as I plan to play the other routes, though I did pick up Felix and Mercedes. Kinda glad I didn't recruit more of them it made it all a bit more emotional
Married Shamir as she's great, and I didn't want to be a perv and marry an ex-student of mine and Claude wasn't an option

8 chapters into Blue Eagles and it's amazing how much playing the same maps again so soon...doesn't matter to me? I don't feel like I'm retreading really, even if I technically am, due to context.

And wow it's nuts how much more there is to this route in regards to up front plot. 2 maps so far that are relevant to the people in my house, more cutscenes in general. Edlegard is #1 but her route is not.

After getting past the first few maps, the game has been easier on hard than it was on normal due to just being way more competent in classing and time management, not to mention starting at A level proff.

You know I was highly skeptical of the college simulator stuff. It's very much grown on me and I'm glad I stuck with it, because good hell did I hate it at first.

For me the watershed moment was seeing all of the skills go up after doing the first lecture - that was when it all clicked and I realized this was actually a well-integrated mechanic instead of fluffy filler.

I'm usually not a big fan of reclassing characters and giving them a bunch of OP skills and prefer to play FE games that allow it without doing so.

But they built the entire game around it so it works for me for once.

all three* routes are for the most part, essentially the same sadly. Even when you do different maps they'll usually be ones from paralogues you've likely played prior. The plot beats up until the last several chapters are exactly the same for all three as well. Temper your expectations.

Not really that much you need Nihil for until the endgame, though. And even then, its really just to prevent bullshit Ire/Corona deaths. With Ashera, all you need to mitigate Aurora is to use Fortify, or the Ashera Staff on replays.

I just like units to have their own gameplay identity and not just be whatever.
