I'm a frequent patron of Popeye's and I'm not black. While I do see some black folk at Popeye's, I see all kinds of other races at the restaurant as well.

As they say, everyone loves fried chicken.

https://www.npr.org/sections/codeswitch/2013/05/22/186087397/where-did-that-fried-chicken-stereotype-come-from

But then, Schmidt says, came Birth of a Nation.

D.W. Griffith's seminal and supremely racist 1915 silent movie about the supposedly heroic founding of the Ku Klux Klan was a huge sensation when it debuted. One scene in the three-hor features a group of actors portraying shiftless black elected officials acting rowdy and crudely in a legislative hall. (The message to the audience: These are the dangers of letting blacks vote.) Some of the legislators are shown drinking. Others had their feet kicked up on their desks. And one of them was very ostentatiously eating fried chicken.

"That image really solidified the way white people thought of black people and fried chicken," Schmidt said.

Schmidt said that like watermelon, that other food that's been a mainstay in racist depictions of blacks, chicken was also a good vehicle for racism because of the way people eat it. (According to government stats, blacks are underrepresented among watermelon consumers.) "It's a food you eat with your hands, and therefore it's dirty," Schmidt said. "Table manners are a way of determining who is worthy of respect or not."

As they say, everyone loves fried chicken.

So it can't really be a 'black' thing can it? And why historically were all these negatively associated stereotypes aimed at black people for a thing everyone enjoyed?

Well it begins with blackface minstrelsy in early 20th century pop media, and their use of white people wearing comically darkened faces, consuming working class food like watermelon and fried chicken to characterize black people as a low-class, illiterate, lazy, licentious, sub-classification of humanity, inherently different from the rest of White America.

I've only heard it used in a joking or sarcastic way.

Only a fool doesn't like southern fried chicken.

Anyway my Grandma use to make this glaze with some honey and butter sprinkled with a little cinnamon.

She would then crumble Corn Flakes.

She would glaze the chicken and roll it in the flakes.

I know some like to use cornmeal or regular flour.

Hell even Rice Krispies.

Well chickens were the only animals slaves were allowed to own and frying them is a cheap & tasty way to prepare them...

The minstrel shows of the 1890's-1920's were the primary promoters of the fried chicken stereotype. It even made it into the racist 1915 film Birth of a Nation.

Black people don't care about this stereotype anyway. Well...those that Ive ever known and been friends with. They're usually the first ones to joke about it.

But seriously, as everyone has said, almost everyone loves fried chicken.

I was at a buffet one time and loaded up my plate with mostly all wings. Then a 2nd time. As I walked back to my table, I passed a table with a black family and I overheard the guy say, "Man, that's just a light-skinned brother right there."

It's not. Never has been. From the beginning going all the way back to ancient Greece it's been used to as cultural shorthand for the inferiority of non-civilized people depicted as dark skinned well endowed 'barbarians' (who were closer the untamed beasts of the wilderness), in contrast to the lighter skinned citizens ('polites' in classical Greek, who discarded savagery for the ideals of polite society).

This stereotype is fully at play several centuries later in chatel slavery in America through to Jim Crow where American mass media regularly paints black men as sexual predators in waiting, and black women as fertile oversexed vixens. There are still echoes of that stereotype today informing porn stereotypes, in law enforcement, in people's racial politics, etc.

That makes it even more hilarious that it back fired on them so hard. Of course none of that shit is funny at it's core but when you see how mad it makes people like Modlogic in modern times, it's pretty classic.

Netflix- Ugly Delicious- Fried Chicken episode- answer.
Every culture around the world has fried chicken.
America is the only culture to weaponize it.
Slaves originally cooked it for their owners when they had guests.
It went 2 directions after the war.
Some ate it because, now, they could eat what they once werent allowed to, others refused to ever cook it again because of who they were forced to cook it for.
Rabbit hole created.
Either way it was viewed by freed blacks, it was used as a stereotype by the very ones that forced them to cook it.
