When something like Privacy Badger, or just disabling 3rd-party cookies, pops the "disable adblock, you moocher!!" doodads, the site should automatically be considered sketchy and probably a security risk.

I get a window telling me to turn off adblock, I adblock that window. If it doesnt work, I turn on the script blocker.

I saw a website pop one of those and the begging window itself tried to send me to a virus site.

They can do that with '90s annoying animated gifs at the top banner or sidebar, instead of auto-playing videos and pop-up windows that cover the content that you actually want to see, and also use more computer resources.

There is "would've", "should've" and "could've".

Sticking a few lines of script into your site header and expecting a magic money button, is no substitute for having an actual advertising department.

important bits:
Heres one way to tell the difference between real advertising and adtech:

Real advertising wants to be in a publication because it values the publications journalism and readership.
Adtech wants to push ads at readers anywhere it can find them.
About a week after our launch, I was seated at a dinner next to a major advertising executive. He complimented me on our new sites quality and on that of a predecessor site we had created and run, AllThingsD.com. I asked him if that meant hed be placing ads on our fledgling site. He said yes, hed do that for a little while. And then, after the cookies he placed on Recode helped him to track our desirable audience around the web, his agency would begin removing the ads and placing them on cheaper sites our readers also happened to visit. In other words, our quality journalism was, to him, nothing more than a lead generator for target-rich readers, and would ultimately benefit sites that might care less about quality.

do you realize that people put time and work into creating those websites that you enjoy? why do you think the work of the individuals involved deserves no compensation?

i'd think someone who writes code for a living would have some appreciation for the work that goes into programming websites but i guess the entitlement factor overrides that?

If you're being shown ads, then you are not the customer: You are the product being sold.

sure, but im not sure how that affects the concept that ad blocking denies compensation to those who work on websites.

If they used actual proper ads, people wouldn't be able to block them. Like go and imbed a picture advertising some product into your article. Wouldn't be blockable without disabling actual content. Instead they just use sketchy ad servers.

Yeah, thats disgusting. Thanks for ruining journalism, adtech!

There are far more ethical ways to make money off your content than known distribution methods of malware, stealing visitors info and stalking them, etc
Ads only exist because of morally bankrupt, greedy, lazy and incompetent website owners

how else should they get paid for it?

charge the customers? lol no. people would just say i'll go to a free alternative, and the site dies.

people are cheap af and want their shit for free. they don't even want to see ads while they get their free stuff now.

Actual ads. Like the kind that might be in a magazine or something. Not "ads" that are really just there to spread malware.
