Manholes aren't what started all of this. They're removing all gendered language. He/she and fireman, mailman, etc... seem to be the focus, while manhole got swept up with it all. But it's the easiest to ridicule, so they make it out to be the foundation. It's a bit humours, and worth a quick scoff, not all this outrage.

And I get that. I strive to say police or firefighter over the gendered terms I grew up with. I have no problem being inclusive with actual people. I think it's funny, because it's an inanimate object and therefore itself can't be offended. So I chuckle at it.

But in it being implemented; I have no horse in the race. Either way it is what it is.

Removing man from words is a bit silly because it doesn't address the actual issue. The real issue is that we used to have a prefix for man to indicate gender and man itself just meant person. Over time, we lost the prefix used to indicate a man was male and just used man itself for that. So an actual solution would be to bring back that sort of thing and restore man to its proper gender neutral state.

My mom called this the "Sheldon cooper problem" after the big bang theory character. It starts with an innocuous thing (if a rudely phrased one). Don't sit in his spot. It isn't that important and it's easier to give in than to fight. Then the next demand comes along and it's again easier to not fight it. And another, and another.

BBT is exaggerated for comedic effect, but it was easy to see a pattern of enabling a spoiled overaged child that kept pushing those boundaries leading him to essentially control the lives of those around him.

Without a laugh track it's the recipe for an abusive relationship. We aren't there yet, but I'm hardly going to keep quiet until we hit an Orwell level issue. As is, I'm definitely going to call out what seems at best a stupid waste of energy, and at worst, another exercise in seeing if you can get people to jump through crazier and crazier hoops.

This type of stuff needs to be done organically.

Let the mayor and city council just refer to manholes as maintenance holes, and put it in official documents (ie. "New funding approved for 2020 renewal of maintenance hole covers"). After a few years, everyone will just refer to them as maintenance holes except for the few Nazis who haven't retired yet.
