New Leaf blew all of the previous ones out of the water IMO. It added a ton of new gameplay aspects, including being able to customize your entire town and not just your house. It was the most fun to play with friends (or with randoms online, when the multiplayer was fairly active) but still had tons of meat for just a solo game too. I spent more hours on that game than all of the previous AC games combined, and I loved it

Nope, you're definitely not. It took out too much, didn't add enough new stuff, and just generally felt barebones to me. Plus, these days I feel like Animal Crossing just works better as a handheld game, because that makes it easier for multiple people to get together and play it.

City Folk was okay, with hacks. Still a real letdown, especially if you had already played Wild World.

City Folk was better than Wild World if only because it gave you a debit card so you could spend the money in your savings account. Don't know why they would cut that from New Leaf instead of expanding it to all the stores.
The two are otherwise interchangeable, and WW would really only get points for being first rather than being good.

The island breaks the New Leaf economy wide open, obsoleting stuff like the rivers or mainland bug catching, meaning if you want to effectively get bells to pay for the many many many shit to pay for in the game then you will have basically zero chance to interact with villagers in the process of your endeavors. Which is kinda the actual point of the games

Main Street is also a step down from the City in every way but variety. It's super sterile. The City was a great idea, its execution was just bafflingly lazy and limited in scope.

Ultimately the devs have failed to add anything to the original formula except to add more dollhouse mechanics for the town. And if you like that that's fine but I think it kind of misses the point of what Animal Crossing was supposed to be as an experience. I wish the devs would handle the next game looking more for ways to add meaningful interactions rather than modeling more static objects and bridge locations for a town you dont really do anything in.

Not related to my main point but in NL they also nerfed sell profit at Timmy&Tommy's to give the player some reason to use Re-Tail, which is really dumb.

Only thing that holds it back from being a perfect 10/10 game is not being able to control which areas in your town are commercial or residential, and how annoying unlocking the pwps are
