There was of course, skepticism. But detractors quickly recanted as soon as they realized they had just witnessed a landmark of cinematic excellence

If I had to guess, nobody cared because this wasn't Selina Kyle but an original character who took the Catwoman mantle.

Like, I literally don't remember anyone giving a shit about the movie at all because it was just Catwoman in name only.

I would figure it's because there's been precedent for a black Catwoman before thanks to Eartha Kitt.

Hell, I almost think they could pull it off again even now with minimal to zero complaints. (Provided the movie is actually *good* this time.)

Halle Berry was widely regarded as the most beautiful woman in the world at the time. Also she was an established superstar.

EVERYONE hated that movie. These days people will defend diverse casting on principle alone. Back then it didn't matter. A turkey was allowed to be viewed as a a turkey no matter how diverse the cast or feminist the film.

I wonder if it was released today would it would be defended as "not that bad" "hated by manchildren" and "how dare this win a razzie"?

My normie mom got upset that the 2015 film Cinderella wasn't French

I can only imagine how upset actual hardcore people would get if that came out today.

The movie was trash, no one talked about it at all except to say how bad it was. Most people are perfectly content with just forgetting it ever existed.

Dark Phoenix didn't strike me as trying to be overly diverse.

People had meltdowns because the trailer had Mystique saying they should be renamed to the X-Women.

There's also the Fantastic Four reboot that cast Johnny Storm as a black guy that everyone knew was shit.

A shitty adaptation is a shitty adaptation.

I don't consider I Am Legend to be a bad adaptation because the lead was changed into a black guy. It's a bad adaptation because the core of the story was changed. But in that instance most people didn't care about the source material anyway lol.
