Day Three: Smashing Pumpkins Mayonaise

Fronted by principal member and gothic nightmare poet Billy Corgan, The Smashing Pumpkins formed in 1988 and saw extreme success in the 1990s with such hits as "Gish," and Siamese Dream, and the absolutely pivotal and magnum opus circa 1995s Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness. Producing single after single, Mellon Collie was a double LP that touched upon themes of teenage apathy, romance, angst, and nostalgia. The dreamscape molded by Corgans lyrics, James Ihas guitar playing, Billy Chamberlains drumming, and Darcy Wretzkys bass strumming highlighted and punctuated the sort of atmosphere their fans were facing in their own lives. But it was Siamese Dream, their sophomoric outing that would see todays (heh) pick. Indicative of the sort of legacy and footprint Smashing Pumpkins were known for, the album ends up kissing noses with the shoegazing scene colleague Sonic Youth would also evoke ever so often. Its loud, its noisy, its soft, its Mayonaise.

Day Four: They Might Be Giants The Statue Got Me High

A two man project consisting of The Two Johns, John Flansburgh and John Linnell, thats been going for almost 40 years strong now. They Might Be Giants have a long history, one thats dotted with the mens often humorous and wacky lyrics and visuals. Early in their career (and, indeed, several times after) They Might Be Giants put out ads allowing for fans to call a service dubbed Dial-a-Song which would offer short songs in exchange for money. Later in the mens lifetimes, theyd release albums exclusively written for children that would garner them awards and nominations, in addition to more fans. A number of people remember them for their music showing up on Nickelodeon via commercials or Tiny Toon Adventures where some of their songs were reformatted for the show and accompanied by short cartoons. Its this users opinion that They Might Be Giants were an important facet of the 1990s. Their videos and music helped mold a certain weird, and quirky aspect of the decade that no other really touched upon. They Might Be Giants are silly, yes, but I absolutely love them for it.

Day Five: R.E.M. - Shiny Happy People

Heralded as one of the best selling music artists of all time, R.E.M. had a bit of a shaky start in the 80s but would find success as early as their first single, Radio Free Europe and go on into the 90s as a pioneer of the genre that was starting to be taken more seriously and released two of their best selling albums during that time - Out of Time, and Automatic for the People. This user has some measure of love and respect for the band beyond their obvious success, in that R.E.M. saw a considerable chunk of their early history helped by North Carolina (which is where this user comes from). Along with The B-52s, R.E.M. would go on to massive success before peacably splitting in 2011. Kate Pearson would lend her vocal talents to R.E.M., particularly in this little gem of a song.

Day Six: Dinosaur Jr. - Tarpit

Originally called Dinosaur before being sued by supergroup The Dinosaurs, Dinosaur Jr. Is generally cited as an alternive rock band, but the groups music has been seen on all sorts of genres. Their earliest material is particularly different, as Dinosaur has a very noisy aesthetic, bordering on noise-pop or even punk to an extent. The trappings of what the group would later be known for is there, but it wasnt fully explored or conceptualized until the sophomoric outing Youre Living All Over Me.

Day Seven: Pylon Volume

Called by no less an authority on the matter, R.E.M. as the best rock band in America Pylon come from the same primordial soup that alumni R.E.M. and The B-52s evolved from that is, Athens, Georgia. Pylon could be considered the third and potentially forgotten or overlooked branch of that citys holy trinity of alt-rock. The bands initial outing, Gyrate, is a laser focused effort producing minimal, yet militant sounding dance tracks that often belie a childish and humorous nature. The songs of the album feel like a teenagers summer camp, memories colored with attitude and mischief. Produced in 1980, brushes of what The Pixies and especially the Yeah Yeah Yeahs would incorporate into their own music is put on display as the groups singer, Vanessa Briscoe, commands you to turn up the volume. They were four art students attempting music, and their second album plays on that background considerably. Although they arent remembered as much as their peers, they undoubtedly left a distinct mark on alternative rock radio.

And that's it!! I'm glad I didn't bungle this "7 Days" topic like I did the first one a year ago, or so lol. I wanna thank everybody that posted and contributed - with conversation, music, and both! This garnered a bigger response than I thought it would, which encourages me to keep going.

I think what I'm going to do is put up a poll for next month's list, with a single music track representing which of the two genres CE would rather see done first.

October is an entirely different matter. I got something very special planned for that entire month. I hope you guys enjoyed this, and I hope you guys look forward to what's coming up!
