Foreword: So, a looong time ago, I did another one of these. It was the first, "7 Days of EBM." And I got a good enough reception, and I enjoyed it enough that I decided to do some more. I was conflicted in whether I should start with this or the genre I'll probably do next. In any case, I hope you enjoy!

P.S.: I'll usually post the music video version if there's an official one for the song.

Disclaimer: In no way am I an authority on the matter, this is merely a list for my and CE's amusement.

Day One: Sonic Youth - Teenage Riot

Known as one of the most pivotal, most important stepping stones in the alternative rock scene Sonic Youth debuted with 1982s Sonic Youth EP. Although their early years are mired in the fading trappings of the post-punk era, they would quickly switch to a more conventional sound that found them mixing guitar distortion with lofty vocals not unlike the downward casting heads of shoegazing. It was 1988s Daydream Nation that saw them skyrocket into success, showered with critical and commercial acclaim and eventually entered into the Library of Congress National Recording Registry.

Man, there's so many good alt rock acts. I wish I could include more. I'm probably going to wind up cheating for some of the other genres, because I've got the 7 I've chosen and then maybe like one or two bonus songs that I'll post, as well.

Holy shit. I actually was thinking about putting this off, but something in me said that if I didn't someone would probably make this topic so that's why I bit the bullet. Damn, I got lucky :P

But hell yeah, you're more than welcome to post recommendations and whatnot!

Most people are probably more familiar with the version of this track that was featured on the Buffy the Vampire Slayer soundtrack, that really downplays the drums and guitars. Honestly, I like them both.

Do you want, like, my opinion on it or a more educated guess? To me, alternative rock is usually rock music that's a little too different to be a big hit on radio. It's not as clean, usually. Can be weird, quirky, etc. I think of groups like Primus, Faith No More, etc.

If we ask wikipedia: "alternative" has been used as a catch-all description for music from underground rock artists that receives mainstream recognition, or for any music, whether rock or not, that is seen to be descended from punk rock (including some examples of punk itself, as well as new wave, and post-punk).

At this point it seems like anything that isn't pop punk or really mainstream like Nickleback qualifies. It's too wide an umbrella.

So I'm just using the link in the OP to post stuff I think shares genre conventions. I've also been trying to stay within the same decade. There are plenty of newer acts though.

It seems like alt rock is just a term for "not classic rock or grunge" >_>

Grunge could be considered alt rock, or it used to be. Most people just treat it like one of the many genres under that umbrella. It's like punk rock that has evolutions stretching from emo sounds of the Cure to the Smiths to Nirvana.

I'm too much of a music nerd to put grunge under alt-rock, although I guess if I had to I would. Grunge was very big on its own in the early to mid 90s. It definitely had its own identity separate from typical alternative. Like, I wouldn't really compare Pearl Jam to Jane's Addiction.

Roughly, I think of alternative as what was counterprogramming to the mainstream at the time (1980s forward) and eventually came into its own popularity.

The only things I tend to put under alt rock are bands too popular to be 'indie,' but that still seem to get limited radio play, if at all. Radiohead is one such band for me. And even then, I need an additional tag to attach to it so I can keep the 'alt rock' section of my music library organized.

And the term 'alternative rock' feels temporally anchored to the 90's and early aughts me, like it has no business describing anything made in the past fifteen years (by a group who wasn't around in the nineties). I also find myself tagging bands who used to be popular but whose careers have moved out of the popular rock scene as alt rock. So that might be bands like Third Eye Blind or Duncan Sheik, who continued to produce music decades after pop radio lost interest.

Other genre tags like 'adult contemporary rock' just don't seem very descriptive to me. I'm more satisfied if I can cross reference something as being a fusion of genres if I can't find one I really like. And dancing around the edges of that whole thing is personal preference/recollection.

Whatever. The below link has nothing to do with the above unsolicited stream of consciousness self reflection.

I'd say grunge is similar to Alt Rock while still being distinctly it's own thing. Someone earlier made a good point that trying to lump in Pearl Jam with Jane's Addiction just seems.... wrong.

But if we ARE counting Grunge for this....

I'll post some of my more obscure favorite songs in here, since my grunge topic from a while back died.

Day Two: The Pixies Gigantic

When Black Francis and Joe Santiago put out an ad seeking a bassist with an interest in folk group Peter, Paul, and Mary, as well as alt act Husker Du, Kim Deal would be the only person to respond to the ad. And although she didnt have a bass because she didnt know how to play, the duo liked her and brought her on as the third wheel of their outfit. When the three got Dave Lovering to join, and Santiago gave the group the name The Pixies, destiny was set. The Pixies are an incredibly influential group that saw great success with their albums Come On Pilgrim in 87 along with Surfer Rosa and Doolittle in the following years. Their loud-quiet dynamic would be critical to the success of such acts as Nirvana, and although their prime years were spent between rocking and ranting between Francis and Deal, the band still continues to play and still continues to live on as one of the most critically acclaimed acts in alt rock history. Kim Deal may have not got to sing as much as she liked in the group (having such disdain for Francis to a point that she went and created her own group during the bands initial hiatus), but Gigantic can be seen as one of the groups most remembered tracks.
