I met with my hook up at 10.40 pm, and now it's 2.30. She lives on the other side of town, so I walked down to the taxi rank and got a ride up to where she lived. Three and a half hours later, and I decided to walk home - stop by the all night gas station, rehydrate, get a snack.

The thing is, my Tinder hook up lives at the end of this cul-de-sac that leads onto my childhood street. And to leave the cul-de-sac, I have to walk past my childhood home.

Every place changes as time goes on, but in the foggy haze of the full moon, I could make out trees that I remember as a kid. The trees don't change, the one on the corner outside is still as huge and intimidating as ever.

And then I'm walking down that old street, and I walk through the crooked, mismatched 4-way intersection. I look down and see this slope, it's nowhere near as steep as the hill I live on now. And I keep going, taking a left downhill onto another slope, and I walk past my old primary school.

Like shit man, I used to live there. I haven't been around that neighbourhood since 2007. And there are new fences, new coats of paint on old houses, but the roots of the place, like the trees, run as deep as ever. It's still adjacent to the meth district, it's teetering on the edge of absolute degeneracy.

I walked a bit further south and got to the gas station. I grabbed a tall can of Mountain Dew, raspberry Schweppes and Sunkist, and I grabbed a corndog. It's been 15 minutes since then, and I'm 10 minutes away from home. I've still got some honey bourbon from the weekend, and I'm gonna drink it with brown creaming soda.

I know precisely what you're feeling. And it hits me from time to time, too. I hadn't been down my old childhood road in roughly 17 years when I moved away from my childhood home. Mom and my older brother had seen the place (my childhood home, I mean) since then, but I hadn't and pretty often I'd always dream about the place.

Well, one day while visiting my brother I decided to go down the old road...and I saw my house. I got out of the car, and just looked at it and I immediately went to crying. A lot of my family's memories are laid out all over that house and that yard, and it's still there. It was like a primal feeling, tears just started falling from my eyes. I had the most visceral urge to knock on the door, and see if I could come in and look around...but I didn't. I got back in the car, and that was it.
