The skull icon, based on the comic book vigilante the Punisher, has been widely embraced by the law enforcement community as a symbol of the war against those who hate law enforcement, said Ed Clark, the president of the St. Louis Police Officers Association, in a letter posted to the groups Facebook page. The citys top cop, however, took a different view. In a Thursday memo obtained by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, St. Louis Police Chief John Hayden told officers that the logo does not coincide with the departments mission to protect life and property and achieve a peaceful society. Hayden did not explicitly say officers could not post the Punisher logo in his memo, but he asked them to be careful about the messages they send to the community via social media. The Plain View Project, a database published at the beginning of June, unearthed scads of racist and anti-Muslim social media posts from police officers in the city. Following its publication, the citys chief prosecutor added 22 cops to a list of officers her office wont take cases from. To compile the report, researchers cross-referenced police rosters and then located officers Facebook profiles, which were then verified, said Emily Baker-White, the lawyer who led the study. The police department opened its investigation shortly after the Plain View Project went live. The Department made a political decision to open an investigation after a complaint that the symbol was offensive and depicted vigilantism, Clark said in his message. The vengeful Punisher character operates outside of the law. Hayden noted in the department memo that the Punishers creator, Gerry Conway, has said the character represents the failure of the criminal justice system. Whether you think the Punisher is justified or not, whether you admire his code of ethics, he is an outlaw," Conway told Syfy Wire in an interview published in January.
