I watched it when I was way younger. I started from the beginning and I loved it until they got to the desert. It dragged on FOREVER to the point I stopped watching. Not sure what arc it was tho. Was really good until that point.

The anime is bad because of filler. The manga is great.

Eh, it has less fillers than most shonen. The manga feels like filler too.

It's at times the greatest anime ever and most of the time dull shonen crap.

Episodes:
1-50 - meh
50-150 - ok this is actually pretty good
150-350 - holy fuck best thing i've ever seen
350-450 - pretty amaze but I'm just really invested now
450+ - this objectively sucks but it's too late to quit

it's fun, but after something like 600 episodes i got really tired of the format of them arriving on a new island, things seeming nice or interesting for a while, before the season's antagonist springs their trap that the characters have to escape and/or overcome

It's a looooooong ass story

But I'm enjoying the vast majority of it quite a bit. The art style definitely takes some getting used to. The only arc I didn't like at all was Long Ring Long Land arc.

I personally couldn't get into it. I read some of the manga chapters in Shonen Jump way back and that was def better than the anime, which is either dragged out or filler.

There's better shit to devote that time to

The "filler" in OP is incredibly slow pacing.

Most anime makes filler to spread out their pacing. One Piece chooses to just regurgitate canon content 43 times over.

If anyone thinks I'm exaggerating, remember that it took Luffy about 26 episodes to defeat Bellamy the second time. A scene that was about half a chapter in the manga.

I don't think it's fair to say that it took Luffy 26 episodes to defeat Bellamy. The problem with that arc is that they filled a ton of time showing a bunch of other battles that were happening at the same time, so the scenes of the fight were spread out over those 26 episodes instead of showing that fight all together and then showing others around it.

They did the same thing with Luffy vs Dogtooth. It took forever to get through the fight because they broke the fight up into pieces and put the other Strawhat crew's events in between those pieces.

I detest the anime/manga medium as a whole, but a decade ago I did like OP because... pirates. Everybody who is anybody likes pirates and adventure.

But then yeah, it kept going on forever and ever. I got through the first few arcs where it was small time, it had tons of charm. Then it got bigger when the world opened up some more. After that it was just one arc after the other of them going to (admittedly incredible) places and just staying there for huge amounts of time to resolve whatever conflict was occurring, then moving on to the next. That is tedious, but in its defense, there is so much attention to detail and creativity that it does make up for it until the tedium wins in the war of attrition. The best times were the little breaks in between arcs where exploring was done, but these are short lived between massive arcs spanning volumes of material.

I do think it's unique in the anime/manga world though, nothing quite as big as it out there. It really is a whole world with often some nitty gritty details explained. Like for example in one arc the city they visit is submerged in water or something, you'd get diagrams of how elevators work and so on and it's just super creative stuff. Lots of life in every drawing in the manga too, truly a masterpiece.

Again though, that can keep you held for years, but the incessant drawing out of events makes one eventually fall into despair of the series. The anime is worse too, for all the reasons that anime is worse than manga. You lose a ton of detail, where it's that detail that makes the world what it is, and they find ways of drawing stuff out even further.

You are right, but all the same...that fight went on for 26 episodes, with the same scene being repeated again and again for an entire season of anime. That arc in general was just like watching the same 4 episodes repeated over and over except with scenes randomly mixed each time.

We used to make fun of Dragonball Z for powering up scenes taking entire episodes, I think this tops that.

I like it though yes it does drag out stuff. Dogtooth fight takes a lot of episodes but if you condense the fight it's something it would only be like 4 episodes long.
