Real talk, I know Nick Fury wasn't actually Nick Fury, but why didn't a single person in that group do a background check on the name Quentin Beck, which would obviously show that he's a dude who worked for Tony Stark and was fired by him?

I can't lie, the more I sit on this movie, the more I slide into actively disliking it.

According to howmanyofme, there are 9 people in the US named Quentin Beck. He could just write it off as a coincidence, or this universe's version of him.

That's where he'd just claim this to be this universe's version of him, because of the whole multiverse story he was telling.

Like even if it's not "Nick Fury" there's such a ridiculous spy-network that running background info on him would be a snap. The storyline would have made so much more sense if he was playing along with him from the beginning trying to sniff out his true motivation. And it would explain why "Fury" would be so willing to let the fate of Earth ride on the backs of a guy he barely knows and Spider-Man, because he knew there was no real danger. Or a basic scan show that everything is being rendered by fucking machines.

Saying "Fury" took everything at face value is so awful.

They'd literally run a background check and see "hmm, this guy Beck seemed to be into tech that creates illusions, we should go research him more and find out what happened to him" and a basic trail would likely lead him to Beck being, you know, the Beck he's working with.

Like the entire plotline makes zero sense in terms of no one being the least bit skeptical among a group that should absolutely 100% being incredibly skeptical. Because they're fucking S.H.I.E.L.D. They're an espionage group. They should be the hardest group to fool.

Talos clearly indicated he fucked up. I'm pretty sure the other people either weren't aware of the swap and thus trusted Fury implicitly or were Skrull themselves with no real idea what to do.

But yes, it's something that bothered me a lot as well before the reveal.

Then have him run a line about how we ran background checks and his story checks out. Make it sound like Talos wasn't a complete idiot when everything (including his wife) seems to imply that he is.

It's not about suspending belief, it's that there's so many plot holes and how many people have to run with the idiot ball for Mysterio's plan to succeed that it undermines the actual success.

I'm thinking about the movie and I think I discovered another plot hole. Spider-Man never takes a dump in the movie but we definitely follow him over the course of a few days. Why wouldn't they just add a line where he says something like "okay I just took a big spider-dump feeling a lot better now". Wish more movies would spell out literally everything so that I don't get mad when I think about it later.

Like the fact that they use bullets to destroy architecture to create the illusion that the creatures are destroying it. Wouldn't there be obvious shell-casings everywhere?

Isn't there a scene where Mysterio flies up to Peter when he's in his Night Monkey costume, and he sits down next to him and puts his arm on his shoulder at one point? I could be misremembering, I'll admit. But since flying Mysterio is completely a projection, how could it physically touch Spider-Man?

Invisible drones collecting the shell casings

He was on the roof the entire time just like he was on the bridge at the end, he walked over and sat next to Peter.

I'm not trying to sound like a dick but you're nit picking some stuff that doesn't make any sense in a movie about a guy with spider powers and shapeshifting aliens. This wasn't even a top 10 MCU movie for me but at least pick some valid complaints.

They didn't come up with this meticulously crafted fail-safe storyline that "Fury" would never be able to find the truth about, they came up with something completely outlandish and it's somehow believable. Is there even a hint of how Beck explained to "Fury" how he traveled to this world?

The film just makes so much more sense if it was just simply Mysterio tricking Spider-Man.

He flew up to Peter initially, from what I remember. But I'll give you that he could have had a drone keeping him invisible then transitioned the projection over to him to create the effect.

These are valid complaints. You're more than free to disagree with them and like or dislike the movie how you see fit, but these are things I noticed and actively hurt my experience of the movie.

That's not including elements that are completely subjective like how completely unfunny the two teachers and Ned are, and considering they're major elements of the first half of the movie, it makes a significant portion of the movie just drag. Once the reveal is over, the movie is pretty good. But I can't imagine having to slog through the beginning again to get to it.

That's not what they said. They said they came up with an outlandish lie and they bought into it.

Because the whole point of everything is that "nowadays people will believe anything" because the world is, indeed, totally screwed up now with so many insane things in it. So when you have insane stuff like alien invasions, people from other dimensions, half the population disappearing and coming back, insane tech, magic BS, literal God's who were previously myths just hanging out, why would they not believe some crazy story about elementals trying to destroy this world?

Like that's the whole point. Not that he was telling bad lies, but that he was telling outrageous ones that can be easily bought into.

In the pub scene as Beck celebrates with his crew, he states that Guterman's story "about a warrior named Quentin-" indicates that Mysterio's real name is not Quentin Beck.

Yup, seems to be it. Although I'm pretty sure they have facial scanning technology, I could understand better how that would throw "Fury" off. Maybe not the actual Nick Fury who I could pretty much guarantee would do that, but Talos probably would never think of doing that.

Great movie, really enjoyed it. The Berlin illusions and the scene at the end where he Peter Tingles the fuck out of that hallway were really top tier stuff. Really enjoyed the MJ romance (definitely did not come out of nowhere, it in the first movie even though he was romancing Liz at the time).

My two complaints are

1) High school hi jinks of hiding his identity, Ned and Betty finding their way to the ferris wheel, Peter almost killing Brad etc was pretty weak. It was handled very naturally in Homecoming but they overkilled it here.

2) Peter (and Tony) basically causing major destruction in a major city again. It's the heroes fault way too often in the MCU. Mysterio might be the psychopath with the sunglasses but he wouldn't have it if not for Peter and Tony, so all those deaths are on their hands. I really dislike it when heroes are the cause of damage. Wantonly causing collateral damage is pretty rare in the MCU, thankfully, but this still sucks. Love the EDITH acronym though.

Overall it was very good, I don't think I liked it as much as Homecoming, but that's okay, still a great movie.

It's funny because I watched the trailer and then told my friends that "Nick Fury is actually replaced by the Chameleon, it's not really him, prepare to be shocked by that." and throughout the whole movie I was like "yep, that's definitely not Nick Fury, it's coming any minute now" and then the movie ended and i was like, shit, I guess I was wrong. Who could have guessed that Fury wasn't replaced, he was just written as a stooge? I couldn't have guessed they would do him dirty like that.

THEN IT WAS MOTHER FUCKING TALOS. I felt so vindicated. I was a bit off and it would have been way better for Spider-Man for it to be the Chameleon but oh well, I'll take it.
