Board 8 > The Walking Dead comic had some big reveals leaked (SPOILERS for upcoming issue)

I'm sure there aren't many users here that read, or keep up with, TWD comics anymore. For me, personally, it just hasn't been the same for a while. But some BIG news about the upcoming issue have been leaked.

Apparently...

Next issue will be the last. The Walking Dead will come to an end on issue 193. Kirkman tweeted to beware leaks, it leaked and looks like it's been confirmed. The issue covers that have been revealed for the issues following 193 were apparently a smokescreen for this. Issue 193 looks like it will be a big issue, in more ways than one, with it being like 70-pages long.

So... I'm just speechless right now. What do you all think about this?

I know Kirkman has been saying "THIS HAS ALWAYS BEEN MY PLAN" but it screams "shit I gotta just finish this" more than anything

as someone who has worked on and off at a comic shop for like a decade I have seen nothing but declining sales for TWD. we get in way less and we never sell out anymore. its time is up.

That's kind of a tricky question to answer. Any other indie comic would kill for TWD sales. It's the biggest indie comic if you go by monthly singles sales, and that's even after it's dropped about 50% of sales over the last few years. Hell, it still sells better than some big comics like Superman and Thor. But where TWD was a juggernaut is collected volumes. For most long running series like TWD, what you'd usually see for sales is that they're high for the first and the most recent volumes, great for comprehensive collections (TWD has compendiums that cover like 50 or so issues), and a sagging middle. For as long as TWD the TV series was one of the biggest shows on the planet, TWD the comic had strong sales for all of its volumes. But that collapsed and it tracks with the TV shows decline. The volumes went from making $15-20M a year to $3M.

This is all a long-winded way of saying, no, in the abstract, the sales aren't bad, but it went from being the biggest comic for adults to a pretty solid performer.

yeah, it sells well for an indie book, and the trades sell great, but it'll never be what it was, and it certainly isn't gaining sales. the only time sales go up is if there's a big advertised death, but recently they had the biggest death of all and I happened to be working that week and even our regulars who have been reading since issue 1 were like "eh." We also didn't have nearly as many calls from speculators asking us to hold them.

it's more a question of if Kirkman wants to keep watching sales of his baby fall into nothingness very, very slowly or go out while people still kinda care

The Walking Dead bucked most comic trends for its entire life. It sold more and more as time went on, it actually benefited from a high profile adaptation (Marvel and DC never get any benefits from their TV shows and movies), it sold exceedingly well despite very deep into its run, and most of its sales came from outside of the direct market. So it's kinda fitting once everyone has checked out that it ends like most every other comic out there, abruptly and unceremoniously.

alright I stopped by my shop and flipped through the issue, I didn't actually read it but it's... ok i guess

i can't say more because I don't want to get my store in trouble but it definitely feels just like "yeah we gotta end this now"

we're closed on tuesdays (no business and we can't sell books early) but we did have two people come to the locked door and ask if we had the walking dead comic

we didn't get that many (like, more than usual, but not a ton) because it wasn't solicited until last minute that it's the last issue, and I assume more LCSs will be in the same boat, so if you want one of these things then you should definitely go out as early as possible tomorrow

Fully grown Carl is living with fully grown Sophia, they're married(?) and have a kid. Carl kills a walker outside their ranch and he has to go to town to go to trial because I guess that's illegal now. Stuff happens and Carl gets let go by Chief Justice Michonne. There is a statue of Rick. Carl tells his daughter about Grandpa Rick and she asks him to tell the story again.

i didn't actually read it, I couldn't be bothered tbqh, I just flipped through it. someone can correct me if I'm wrong.

Thats a pretty accurate summary

Its illegal because killing the Walker was destruction of property. It was part of Maggies Sons travelling tour. Carl hates the idea of them being near his family so he kills the rest of them at night. Thats when hes taken to Chief Justice Michonne who agrees with him.

ooooh ok thanks for clearing that up, I actually did end up buying an issue, my roommate is the manager of my LCS and he saved one for me because they did end up selling out about an hour after they opened. i'll give it a real read tonight.

For an abrupt ending like this one, I actually liked it. Didn't like how they almost villanized Maggie, after everything she had been through with Rick and the rest of the gang. Other than that, it was a nice ending.
